Overview:

Beneath These Chains is the third book in the Beneath Series, but can be enjoyed as a full-length, standalone romance.

I was raised on the streets, so I know things are rarely as simple as they appear—especially this rich girl showing up at my pawnshop demanding a job.

She’s the most tempting thing I’ve ever seen, and I’ll be damned if I can make her leave.

Shit just got complicated … but when it comes to her, I want complicated.

We’re both fighting our own demons, and our only chance at a future is to let go of the past.

But will we be strong enough to break free from beneath these chains?

I received a free ARC copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This is book 3 in the series and the only one I have read. This is a really great story. There is so much strife going on in this story. This story is very moving and you really can’t figure out who did it. I had no clue and even when it was found out I couldn’t believe the outcome. Her mother finally faces her demons and explains her choices. She finally finds someone worthy enough to break her rules for. This is an empowering story and so worth it.

Book editor Hannah Levinson couldn’t be happier. This “Nice Jewish Girl” is ready to marry the man she’s longed after for half her life. When her fiancé suggests they audition for Last Fling, a steamy new reality show for engaged couples, she lets herself be swayed. Maybe she’ll learn a thing or two.

Vlad Shustov’s fall from a once-bright career as a competitive figure skater was swift. Now trapped by a shameful past and an uncertain future, “Vlad the Bad” strips for cash. Joining the cast of Last Fling could earn him a fortune—or at least enough to finally leave stripping. But to win the show’s prize, he must seduce an engaged woman, something he can’t even bear the thought of.

Hannah’s not like any woman Vlad’s met before. Betrayed by the man she thought she loved and relegated to the ugly-duckling role she’d worked so hard to shed, can she trust there’s more to Vlad than meets the eye? With sleazy TV tactics shattering the last shreds of the contestants’ confidence, they’ll have to believe true happiness is not only possible…it may be looking right at them.

excerpt

When Hannah arrived at The Smiling Shark just before midnight, Vlad was waiting on the love seat, his arm resting along the back; a glass of wine was on the table. For a long moment, their gazes locked and Hannah drank in the sight of him.

“Is this what I’m doing to thank you?” she asked.

“Nyet,” he said. “That, I’m still deciding. This is because seeing you only this afternoon with your boys was not enough. Not after how we left things last time.”

“I didn’t like how we left things either. Especially since you might go home after talent night.”

He lifted his hand, inviting her to sit beside him. She settled into the circle of his arm, the brush of his fingertips against her bare shoulder making her skin tingle. Across the room, the bartender smiled.

“Getting eliminated wouldn’t be the worst thing,” Vlad said softly. “Except for leaving you.”

“What about the money?”

“Maybe I’ve changed my mind about how important it is to win.”

Did that mean he had changed his mind about trying to start a new life? Though she was disappointed, it shouldn’t come as a surprise. He hadn’t had a clear picture of what that new life might be, and it was hard to walk away from what one knew. Without an education, it would be hard for him to earn the sort of money he earned from stripping. She wouldn’t demean him by suggesting that he ought to “better” himself. Instead, she smiled and took his hand. “This show has changed my mind about a lot of things, too.”

“Jack?”

Her smile felt strained. “Once we’re back in New York, things between us will sort themselves out. Being here has made me see that so much of what I always believed wasn’t necessarily true. I mean, in twenty-four hours, I’ll be tap-dancing on live TV!”

“Feel ready for it?”

“I think so. You saw me rehearse. What do you think?”

“I think you move very well.”

“For a big girl, you mean.”

“Not at all. But you’re still not confident enough to look your audience in the eye.”

“Can you blame me?”

“You have no reason to doubt yourself, and showing confidence matters. In skating, the judges wanted to see we were not afraid to look right at them. It is even more important for me now. Ever seen a stripper afraid to make eye contact?”

“I’ve never seen a stripper at all.”

He blinked in surprise. “Really? Not even a fake cop dropping in on a bachelorette party?”

“My friends aren’t like that. We don’t get enjoyment out of degrading people.”

Vlad raised his brow. “Degrading them?”

She winced. “No, I didn’t mean it like that.”

“Sometimes, it does feel like I’m a piece of meat, and nothing else.” His voice was resigned.

“Vlad, I’m sorry.”

His touch reassured her that he didn’t take her comment personally. “No harm done. Still, the fact you have never seen an exotic dancer troubles me. I think we should remedy that right now.”

It took a moment to grasp his meaning. “You’re going to strip for me, here? Now?”

“If you’re only going to see one, might as well be the best.” He turned to the bartender. “Miguel, you don’t mind, right?”

The bartended laughed. “Oh, no, senor, I don’t mind at all.”

“First we need some music.” Vlad took her hand and led her across the room to the jukebox, where he perused the selections.

She was conscious of his strong hand still clasping hers. “What do you usually strip to? Disco?”

“Depends on the character I’m playing. I just did a routine to Lady Gaga’s ‘Applause,’ where I played a movie star. I’ve done construction workers, cops, the usual. You won’t get the full effect though, because I’m not wearing tear-off pants.”

This sounded intriguing. “There is such a thing? Where do you get them, Stripper Supply?”

He laughed. “It’s just normal pants cut up and held together with fasteners. Can’t be too tight though, or I’ll break out of them too early.”

Hannah shook her head. “The things you learn.”

“This song’s good.” He fed money into the slot and punched a number, then gestured at a nearby chair. “You sit here. And take out some money. I don’t do this for free, you know.”

His teasing wink made her laugh. “I didn’t bring any.”

He grabbed a cocktail napkin and folded it in half. “We’ll pretend.”

She took the napkin and settled back, imagining she was a customer at the club where he danced. As she sipped her wine, he braced his hands on the arms of the chair and whispered in her ear. “A private dance, just for you.”

A rush of heat spread through Hannah’s cheeks and her heart thrummed wildly as she gazed up into his chiseled features and warm, gold-flecked eyes. Deep within, the muscles below her belly tightened and quivered. Her mouth felt dry, despite the wine. This was unquestionably erotic, yet at the same time…safe. An experience enjoyed by millions of women, though never her. Until now. The sexiest man she had ever met was about to perform, and she didn’t have to share this moment with anyone else.

Excerpt:

The bell on the door to Couture Corsets tinkled, announcing that a customer had just walked into Paige Moore’s small boutique in Old Town San Diego, where she designed and sold custom-made corsets.

“It’s just me,” she heard her good friend Raina Beck call out.

Knowing Raina would just head to the back area of the shop where Paige did all her designing and creations, she continued hand sewing small seed pearls to an exquisite white satin corset she was making for a client’s wedding night.

A moment later, Raina walked past the curtain of glittering crystals hanging in the doorway that separated the retail floor from the workroom. “Wow, that looks stunning,” she said of the one-of-a-kind bridal corset, her voice laced with awe.

Paige glanced over her shoulder and grinned. “Thanks. Once I add the crystal and lace embellishments along the bodice, this bride is going to knock her groom’s pants off when he sees her in this corset.”

Raina laughed. “Not a bad way to start off a marriage.”

“What? By getting lucky?” Paige asked humorously as she set her needle and thread down on the nearby worktable that dominated the area.

“And being totally turned on by your new wife.”

“Speaking of getting turned on,” Paige said with a smirk as she eyed her cheerful friend. “You’re glowing and smiling all the time, so things with Logan must be good, yes?”

“Really good,” Raina admitted, her face flushing with happiness. “And I do have to say, it’s nice having sex on a regular basis,” she teased.

Paige sent her a mock glare. “Yeah, I wouldn’t know, so stop bragging,” she grumbled, even though she was genuinely thrilled that Raina had found a man who absolutely adored her. “What brings you by?”

“I have something for you,” Raina said and handed her an envelope with the word Welcome embossed in black across the front.

Paige’s eyes widened as she looked at the envelope. “Oh my God, is this an invitation to your wedding? I can’t believe you didn’t tell me…” Her words and excitement trailed off as she pulled out the card inside and read the message granting her a night at The Players Club, an exclusive, members-only sex club.

“Oh, wow,” she breathed in surprise and glanced back at Raina. “I thought—”

“If I was getting married, you’d know about it before I sent out invitations because you’d be my maid of honor,” Raina interrupted with a laugh. “Besides, I’m not even engaged yet. This invitation is for you,” Raina went on with a grin. “The Players Club is a place where you can get down and dirty and freaky with a stranger, indulge in a fantasy, or try a particular kink that has piqued your interest.”

“I have to say, that sounds very tempting.”

Oh, yes, Paige was definitely intrigued. It had been a year and a half since she’d been with a man. A year and a half since the morning Sawyer Burrows had shattered her heart with his betrayal. And the thought of indulging in a night of hot sex with an anonymous guy was incredibly appealing. She needed to do something to finally shake Sawyer from her mind and thoughts and let the painful past go so she could move on with her life.

Easier said than done, but an evening at The Players Club was a good start to putting an end to her dry spell.

“There is one thing you need to know.” Raina suddenly looked uncertain. “Logan told me that Sawyer is a member of The Players Club. Which, in my opinion, could work to your advantage if he’s there the night you decide to go.”

Paige frowned, not sure how she felt about running into a man she swore she hated yet who still had the ability to affect her on a physical level. Yeah, that part drove her absolutely crazy, but she was curious what Raina meant. “How so?”

“If he’s there, think of it as a bit of revenge.” Raina’s eyes danced with mischief. “Flirt with other guys and enjoy yourself. Show Sawyer exactly what he’s been missing and what is no longer his. Men are such jealous, possessive creatures, and it’ll drive him nuts to see you with another man.”

The corner of Paige’s mouth curled into a smile as she thought about her friend’s suggestion. It had been too long since she’d felt desired and sexy. Combine the bonus of possibly showing Sawyer that she was over him by letting him see her enjoy another man’s attention, and it really was a win-win situation.

Her decision made, she met Raina’s gaze and lifted her chin in determination. “I’m totally down for that.”

About Erika Wilde

Erika Wilde

Erika Wilde (aka Janelle Denison) is the USA Today bestselling author of over 50 contemporary romances for multiple print publishers.

So, why the new pen name?

As Janelle Denison I’ve always written sexy books, but lately my writing has taken on more erotic elements that I wanted to keep separate for readers because not everyone likes their reading material on the spicier, kinkier side of romance.   However, please be assured that even as Erika Wilde, you will still get an emotionally layered story with characters you’ll care about and fall in love with.   That is always my goal, whether I’m writing straight contemporary romances, or more erotically charged stories.

Currently, I’m working on The Marriage Diaries and making sure that Dean and Jillian enjoy exploring the more erotic side to their marriage.  The series will be on-going, with no foreseeable ending as of right now, for as long as readers want to be voyeurs to Dean and Jillian’s sizzling new relationship.

I’m also planning a spin-off series in the future, featuring the hot military men that work security for Dean at Noble and Associates.

EXCERPT

I feel a hand in my hair, brushing a soft strand away and I roll into his touch, wanting more. “Joel?” I whisper with shut eyes and a smile. When did he get home? I feel coarse rough hands slide down my neck and my stomach tenses. Something feels off. Joel’s hands are smooth. My eyes flash open, seeing an unfamiliar short chubby male figure looming over me. His breath smells like rancid milk. The room is dark from the sun setting and the lights off, but I can still make out enough features for a lineup.

His hands forcefully pin mine above my head, giving me no time to try and retrieve my gun across the room. I need to fight back. My eyes widen as my adrenaline kicks in.

“Where’s the baby?”

Excerpt

The knowledge that this was all for Evie and for the life he wanted to build for her echoed in the choked whir of the engine of his truck. A new car could be purchased after he had his little girl safely with him and he’d turned his parents’ old beach house into their home.

To his parents’ fury, and mostly to annoy them, Ryan had refused to sell the beach house to help cover the cost of his father’s crimes. He’d paid off their mansion and managed to keep his dad out of jail, but the beach house was non-negotiable.

Unable to plan beyond the next demand or the next moment, he hadn’t known why it was so important then, but he was eternally thankful that he’d listened to his gut.

Alexa had thrown him out of their home in Buckhead the next week. He’d moved into his parent’s pool house after reminding his father that he’d effectively saved his ass, and began to formulate a plan to escape everything he’d ever really known.

The truck bumped and bounced over the massive tree roots that stuck out of the ground. Reminding himself that Sienna was long gone and that the Inn now had new owners was how he forced himself out of the truck. She’s probably off in California like she always wanted to be. She’s probably married to some lucky bastard without even half the problems you have. She deserves to be happy and fulfilled. Thoughts of Sienna lying in bed under some unnamed man, staring up at him with that hunger in her eyes, made him furious. He shook them away as he eased onto the porch. There was a large hole, the approximate shape of a boot, that had gone through the rotting wood. The decks and porches needed to come down first. He could do that today.

The door was open just a crack. It appeared too swollen to fully close. Ryan knocked, and it swung open further. He glanced around, not wanting to walk into someone else’s home. Not wanting to walk in at all.

The memories were far too potent. It even smelled like her grandmother’s cooking and that coffee she used to make them that tasted like heaven. The only thing sweeter was kissing it off of Sienna’s lips.

Suddenly, he heard a shrill scream from upstairs. Another echo of terror met him on the steps that he took three at a time. It sounded like someone was being attacked.

Working on instinct alone, he threw open one of the bedroom doors and raced towards the shrieking shouts of fear.

“Oh my God! This is horrible!” He heard her voice one half second before he flung open the bathroom door.

Another shriek ricocheted through his ears as Sienna grabbed an old hand towel and attempted to cover her absolutely spellbinding body. Shock rocketed through Ryan. He didn’t know what to think, but he was unable to do anything more than stare at her. She’d been beautiful when she was seventeen, but damn, she was a full-blown woman now, and he’d never seen anything more breathtaking.

Her beautiful, heart-shaped face was contorted in horrified shock. Her hair was soaking wet and did a decent job of covering her painfully hardened nipples. His eyes tracked downward without his permission. She’d covered the bottom half of her breasts, her slender waist, and her pussy with the towel, much to his chagrin. He saw half of a large tattoo that ran from her back over her luscious ass and down her right leg. Ryan ordered himself to turn around, but my God, she was exquisite. It was like being presented with a feast after a long, long famine.

“Sienna? I’m so sorry!” He finally managed to turn and tried not to look back.

“Ryan!” she finally gasped.

“Sienna, I had no idea you were here. I heard someone screaming. I’m so sorry!” He kept repeating the vow, but he couldn’t make sense of what had just happened himself.

“Go in there,” she ordered, and he assumed she pointed to the door. With a quick nod, he left the bathroom and closed the door behind him.

Excerpt

Getting out of the car, she glanced down at herself to make sure she looked presentable. She had on one of her work outfits, consisting of a long, flowing, casual skirt, a tank top, and a thin tunic sweater. She’d set up her business when she was twenty-one, so she’d been doing this for seven years. In that time, she’d learned that clients expected a certain look from pet artists, and the slightly bohemian style—as long as it wasn’t too over-the-top—satisfied their expectations nicely.

Pet portraits weren’t exactly a booming business, so she did anything she could to give herself an advantage. She’d done all right for herself, considering. The first few years had been slow, but she’d used her adoptive parents’ wealthy contacts in the area and had slowly built up a business. She’d made a living out of it for the last four years, but if her adoptive parents hadn’t left her a sizable inheritance, she never would have been able to afford her lifestyle.

She swung her leather satchel over her shoulder and headed toward the entrance of the park. She was supposed to meet her client at eleven, so she was exactly on time.

There was no sign of a man and a German shepherd hanging around the entrance, which was where she assumed they would meet up, so she waited for a few minutes, watching all the approaching cars.

It was the weekend and a warm, sunny day in April, so the park was crowded. She’d never been to this park before, since she lived on the opposite end of town. There was a wide stretch of grassy lawns and several different trails that led into a wooded area.

Her breath hitched at the sight of the woods. If this client wanted her to walk those trails with him, she would have to tell him no. She’d make up something about how she needed open areas like the lawns to get a good picture of the dog.

She hadn’t gone beyond the edges of any woods since her father had been murdered eighteen years ago.

When she felt a flash of overwhelming emotion at the memory, she pushed the thought away with a practiced mental strategy, breathing out, clearing her mind, and looking at the family of four approaching with their golden retriever.

The dog had a good build, so she studied it, mentally sketching out a portrait of it in her mind.

After a few minutes, the threat of the memory had cleared.

At fifteen after eleven, she started to wonder if her client was waiting elsewhere in the park, since there was still no sign of him at the entrance. She walked down the main path and searched the wide lawns for a man with a German shepherd.

She had to walk over the slight hill toward the trees before she saw him, throwing a Frisbee to the dog.

She sighed, thinking it would have been polite had the man waited near the entrance for her like a normal person, but the wealthy types she catered to often weren’t thinking about what was convenient for her. She swallowed her faint annoyance and walked over to him.

The dog was beautiful. Well-bred and healthy, with thick fur, good lines, and a powerful run. He would make a beautiful portrait, even if his owner was rather inconsiderate.

Kelly pulled out her camera and snapped a few pictures as she approached. She usually painted from photographs, since that was easier for everyone—aside from the occasional client who mistakenly thought the portrait was “purer” when painted from real life. She always got to know the animals before she painted them so she could invest the paintings with personality, as well as get the visuals right.

The man saw her approaching and taking pictures of the dog, so he stopped throwing the Frisbee and waited until she reached him.

“Good morning,” she said with her professional smile. “He’s beautiful. His name is Chester?”

The man frowned. She guessed him to be in his forties. He was very attractive, with a strong, lean body, dark hair, and the stance of a man who was used to being in authority. He didn’t look at all the way he’d sounded on the phone.

“No,” he said, his voice deep and cultured. “It’s not.”

Kelly gave a little start as she realized she might have made a mistake. “He’s not Chester? You’re not Mr. Verner?”

“I’m not.” He tossed the Frisbee again, causing the dog to run exuberantly over to catch it.

“Oh. Sorry.” She gave him a sheepish smile. “I’m supposed to meet someone with a German shepherd, and you’re the only one here who matches that description.”

He smiled then, evidently assured she wasn’t some crazed stranger who was stalking his dog with a camera. “If it’s some sort of online dating hookup, you should get a better description of him, rather than just going for the dog.”

There was amusement in his tone and a kind of teasing flirtation in his expression, making him even more attractive than before. She liked the little lines at the corners of his mouth and eyes, and she liked the warm chocolate brown of his eyes.

His body was nothing to sneer at either—his muscle development graceful and strong, rather than bulky.

As she’d been studying him, he’d been doing the same with her, his gaze crawling over her from her painted toenails in her sandals to her dark gold hair in a low ponytail. It was pretty obvious that he liked the looks of her, since his gaze heated up as he drawled, “He sure won’t be disappointed in you, though.”

“It’s not an online dating thing,” she said, feeling a familiar prickle of excitement and interest running down her spine. Who was this guy, anyway? “It’s a client I’m meeting.”

“I see.” He gave her a leisurely smile, his eyes lingering at the slight cleavage exposed at the neckline of her tank top. “Well, he still won’t be disappointed.” When his dog ran up to him, offering the Frisbee excitedly, the man grabbed it and tossed it again.

“You move pretty fast, don’t you?” She was used to men coming on to her, but usually in bars or clubs, where they were clearly both there for that purpose. It wasn’t all that common for a man to come on strong like this in normal daily interaction.

It was strangely exciting, though. Her heart was starting to beat faster as she waited for his response.

He laughed softly, his eyes still lingering on her face and body in a way that felt deeply entitled. “You’re the one who approached me with a ridiculous pretense of looking for a client.”

“Hey! That wasn’t a pretense. It was an honest mistake.” She pulled out her business card and offered it to him. “See.”

Excerpt

“Are you my daddy?”

Ricky Lee Reed, originally of Smithtown, Tennessee, and only replanted to New York City a few years back, gawked at the child who’d asked him the question for a mere moment before he turned his attention to the adult female who held the child.

He’d admit it wasn’t a question he expected to get, you know, ever. For a bunch of reasons, too, but mostly because he didn’t know this woman. He wasn’t one of those guys who nailed so many females he forgot their faces or names. So then . . . why was this child asking him this question? And even stranger, why was the female raising her brows and suddenly asking, “Well . . . are you?”

Wait. Wouldn’t she know? Shouldn’t she? Good Lord, this city. Maybe he’d never get used to living here. Ever. It was surprisingly safer than life in Smithtown, Tennessee, but it was weirder. Maybe because there were way more full-humans in Manhattan—he’d found full-humans were much stranger than shifters—and Smithtown was filled with shifters. Wolves, mostly. A few bears on the outskirts too old and big for the Pack to bother trying to make move. But all those wolves in one place with enough ’shine to take down the Russian army meant there was a lot more danger around those hills of his hometown than there ever could be on the mean streets of this city. No matter what the movies said. And yet life in Manhattan could be so strange in comparison to what he’d left behind.

He’d only come over to this bench inside the giant Sports Center, home to all of New York’s shifter-run sports teams, so he could chat with the pretty female sitting there. Perhaps get her number. She was real cute, probably because of all that curly hair. Most of the females in his Pack had straight hair, but this one had blondish-brown hair with lots of black streaks that was just kind of a curly mess. Just these wild, soft curls that nearly covered her eyes and reached to her shoulders. Yeah. He liked her hair. And the fact that she was a jackal didn’t mean much to him. She was still canine, like him, and he wasn’t looking for his mate. Just a few dates, maybe a little fun . . .

Fun. Not fatherhood.

“No,” he finally told them both. “I’m not your daddy.”

The female hugged the boy on her lap and kissed his forehead. “Sorry, Denny. Maybe we’ll find your daddy someday.”

excerpt

He pulled her into his arms. “You are safe.” He soothed. She pushed her face into his chest and held on tight. “Do you want to talk about it?”

“I had a bad dream.”

“Sounds to me as if it were more than just a nightmare.” He stroked her hair, pulled back his hand. Red sticky liquid covered it. “You’re bleeding.”

“I am?” She touched the wet patch. “Damn.”

He turned her, pushed her head down, flipped her hair over and inspected the cut.

“I think we should get it checked out.”

“It’s just a cut.” She pushed away. “I’ve looked worse.” She reminded him.
