former scoundrel embark on a daring mission of desire.

Once the ton’s most notorious rake, Dalton MacIain has returned from his

infuriating man than the Earl of Rathsmere yet she is intrigued by the torrid
rumors she has heard about him…and the fierce attraction pulling her toward

five. Her first published work was The Maple Leaf, read over the school
intercom when she was in the first grade. In addition to wanting to be a
violinist (her parents had a special violin crafted for her when she was
seven), she wanted to be a lawyer, a teacher, and, most of all, a writer.
Though the violin was discarded early, she still admits to a fascination with
the law, and she volunteers as a teacher whenever needed. Writing, however, has

EXCERPT

The world seemed eerily quiet as she pushed herself up from the hard packed dirt, only to fall back down. Her ankle hurt. Tears filled her eyes, as she glanced around. There stood the women from the mercantile, staring, and their eyes full of terror. She’d get no assistance from them.

John Hardy strutted into the street and laughed while he gestured for two of his men to pick her up. “Come on, honey, it’s time for our honeymoon.”

She heard the clomping of hooves and the turn of wagon wheels behind her but the wagon didn’t stop to help her either. By this time, a crowd had gathered and now there were men standing with the group of women. She tried to plead for help with her eyes but they glanced away.

Two men grabbed at her to haul her back into the saloon when a loud cocking of a gun erupted from behind.

“Put her down.” A man’s voice threatened.

John stepped forward, thrusting out his chest. “Listen, Cinders, this is none of your business. It’d be in your best interest to leave things be.”
The world began to dim and spin, the smell of blood was the last straw. She fainted.

“Ok,” he agreed reluctantly, his lips curling downward, “But you said a few minutes. Let’s say goodnight first,” he twisted them into a smile, sliding his hands up her arms and around her back. His mouth pressed to hers, her resolve softened, allowing him to deepen the kiss. Slowly, he inched between the shrubs along the edges of the walkway and worked her towards the building.

When her spine met the brick wall, she felt a brief surge of excitement, hiding in the shadows with him and his body pushing against hers. A moment later, panic gripped her; his fingers had found flesh and tickled her waist. “Ked, stop,” she managed to free herself enough to protest, before he reclaimed her, holding her in place while he continued to pull at her clothing, trying to force her onto the ground behind the short bushes.

Falling, Bailey hit the earth beneath her, bruising her knees as she went down. Rolling onto her back, she flailed her limbs wildly, the weight of him making it hard to breath. She emitted a loud shriek, and a hand clamped over her mouth, pressing her cheek painfully against her jaw and teeth.

With a little help from billionaire bear Jasper Dixon, anything is possible. The last thing that Artemis Miller wants is to get burned by the handsome shifter she’s been paired with by their boss. After all, Jasper Dixon isn’t known as ‘Rumpled Bear Skin’ for nothing: the notorious playboy has a different woman on his bearskin rug every weekend, or so the office legend goes. The only thing that could make working with Jasper worse? The fact that she’s assigned to accompany him to the company cabin down in Port Jameson for a full week. The ante’s upped when Jasper gives her three chances to guess his mate mark. If she wins, she gets a raise, and if she loses? She has to have dinner with Jasper for the rest of the summer.
The billionaire grizzly is running a major damage control campaign of his own. Jasper Dixon’s reputation precedes him, but he can explain: what’s a bear shifter without a mate supposed to do? It’s going to take more than pickup lines, wine, and caviar to woo Artemis Miller, the woman he’s sure is his fated mate, but of course, those things might just help him get what he wants. When he learns that Artemis has no idea he’s one of Seattle’s most eligible billionaires, Jasper realizes that the only way he can woo the Montana collegiate is to show her his Port Jameson roots, from taking her salmon fishing to escorting her to the Marionberry Festival.

Artemis’s father might have bragged about her abilities to his bosses at Asher Lumber, but he didn’t raise a fool. Artemis isn’t sure if Jasper’s just putting on an act or if the grizzly werebear is actually trying to befriend her…or even worse, trying to woo her. If it’s the latter, Artemis isn’t so sure she’ll be able to resist Jasper’s charms for long…but will she give him a second chance, and more importantly, will Artemis figure out Jasper’s mate mark?

Love and babies: two things Lucy doesn’t have time for in her life. It’s 1926 and this young West Australian woman is happy as an accountant. And she intends to stay that way.

Until Giorgio, an Italian migrant fisherman sent to Australia in disgrace. The moment their eyes meet across the fish market, he knows Lucy’s the girl for him. If it weren’t for his reputation as a rake, he’s certain he could catch more than just her eye – perhaps even

her heart, too.

A tale of crabs, cricket bats and catching your heart’s desire in Jazz Age Western Australia.

excerpt

How To Catch Crabs Excerpt 1

Motion through a shop window caught my eye and I focussed on the source – Mr Paino, peering over a pile of potatoes. When my eyes met his, his waving turned to beckoning as he enticed me inside.

“What are you doing up from the farm?” he asked as a gust of wind slammed the door shut behind me.

“Buying fish. Mum’s got another bun in the oven and she’s insisting on fish for dinner.”

Mr Paino laughed. “Sounds like my Maria was with little Sam. She wanted fish every day. Good thing our shop is only a few streets from the fish markets – she’d walk there in the morning with the children while I worked.” He eyed me. “So when are you settling

down and having children, Lucy?”

“Doesn’t that usually require a suitable husband?”

His smile died. “For a respectable girl like you, yes.” Without lightening his dark tone, he continued, “My brother has arrived from Italy. He’s just started working at the fish markets for Merlino, though I don’t know how long he’ll last. Last night he came home

swearing that crabs and sardines were the spawn of the devil.”

He wasn’t far wrong, but even if they were, I’d have the devil to pay if I didn’t bring that spawn home. “So your brother and Mr Merlino have crabs and sardines today?”

Mr Paino choked. “I don’t know about Merlino, but I wouldn’t be surprised about my brother. He was quite the troublemaker back home in Sicily, which is why Mama sent him to Australia. She seemed to think that sending him over to the other side of the world

might make him turn over a new rock.”

“Leaf,” I corrected without thinking. “Turn over a new leaf.”

His smile turned rueful. “Whatever the expression is, I doubt my brother is capable of changing. The girls all loved him back home and he loved them right back.”

“So you’re warning me that your brother is a rake, Mr Paino?”

He chuckled. “I don’t think you need warning, Lucy. You’re not silly.”

No, but there were plenty of girls who were. I glanced outside and was surprised to see a lance of light pierce the cloud, reflecting off the footpath in blinding white. “Looks like the rain’s let up. See you later, Mr Paino.”

I slipped out of his shop and hurried toward the fishing boat harbour. The market hall was so busy, no one noticed an extra body – least of all one as skinny as mine.

“No, my boys don’t have crabs. With weather like this, they’re off catching big fish and not messing about in the shallows!” a laughing voice cut across the hubbub and all sound seemed to quieten. Maria’s unmistakeable voice was music to my ears and everyone

else’s, too, it seemed.

I’d never envied a woman so much in my life. She was the same age as me – but that’s where the similarities ended. Blonde and curvy like some sort of Italian painting of an angel, Maria Speranza was a young widow who could do as she pleased. She worked for the Basile family, but you’d never guess that she was anyone’s subordinate. As Merry D’Angelo’s niece, she had no parents to answer to, and as long as Merry approved of her, she had all the respectability any woman in Western Australia could muster. She’d arrived three years before and showed no sign of taking a second husband, nor needing one…though every man who saw her seemed to think otherwise. She was the uncrowned queen of the fish market.

In the dim recesses of my mind, I registered what she’d said: the Basiles didn’t have crabs. But Mr Paino had said that Mr Merlino did, so I headed for the cramped corner of the market where his counter stood. Like everywhere, there were hierarchies and as Mr. Merlino was new here, with no relatives to vouch for him, he had to build his own reputation. Much like my parents had – and many of the other migrants here.

As I approached the counter, he rose from beneath it, unfolding to a height several inches taller than me. And my eyes met…a pair that were much darker than Paolo Merlino’s. Then one of them winked.

I blinked furiously, backing up to put some distance between me and this…rake, I realised, as I took him in. Well-muscled arms strained at his shirt sleeves as he folded them across his chest, making his knitted jumper tighten just enough to show the outline of

more muscles beneath. He said something in Italian, his voice rich and deep, though he looked much younger than his brother.

His voice felt like it rumbled through my chest as much as his and his second wink said he knew it, too.

Don’t be silly, I told myself. Rakes are good for gardening and that’s it.

“I don’t understand Italian,” I told him. “Where’s Mr Merlino? I need crabs and I understand he can help me.”

His eyes seemed to widen as he heard my broad Australian accent. Had the fool thought I was Italian? “If it is crabs you want, streghetta, I will give you those and much more besides.”

“English,” I insisted. “If you’re going to insult me, then I’ll go elsewhere.” I turned to go, but I had no idea if anyone else stocked crabs. If Maria didn’t have them, I’d be lucky if anyone did.

“I called you a little witch, miss, because you have enchanted my senses. I am at your service.”

Meet the Author

Demelza Carlton has always loved the ocean, but on her first snorkelling trip she found she was afraid of fish.

She has since swum with sea lions, sharks and sea cucumbers and stood on spray-drenched cliffs over a seething sea as a seven-metre cyclonic swell surged in, shattering a shipwreck below.

Sensationalist spin? No – Demelza tends to take a camera with her so she can capture and share the moment later; shipwrecks, sharks and all.

Demelza now lives in Perth, Western Australia, the shark attack capital of the world.

The Ocean’s Gift series was her first foray into fiction, followed by the Nightmares trilogy. She swears the Mel Goes to Hell series ambushed her on a crowded train and wouldn’t leave her alone.

“ROGUE WOLF is a fast paced, intriguing look into the world of shifters. Salvatore is old world a bit stodgy and Margo is very much new world and on top of that a lone wolf and Enforcer. Excerpt from River Wolf:

So not ready to be awake…

A knock on the door intruded in her drifting and she groaned. Dammit, she was a guest. She couldn’t stay in bed all day. In fact, what she needed to do was get up, shower, dress and get her ass on the road. Florida seemed a hell of a long way to go, though. Rolling over, she shoved the blankets away then climbed out of the bed. Glaring at the light between the curtains, she rubbed a hand over her face, then stumbled to the door.

Opening it a crack, she gazed at her host. Goddammit. He looked perfect. Dressed in a clean, nicely pressed shirt with the top two buttons open to reveal the faint curls of dark against his chest and smelling like heaven, he looked good enough to eat. His hair wasn’t even damp, though it fell in a soft wave toward his forehead. He’d been up long enough to shower and dress—and he wore a smile.

“Ugh,” she sighed. “Please God tell me you are not one of those happy morning people.”

The corner of his sensual mouth quirked higher. The effect on his expression devastated her sleepy senses. No human should ever look so damn good without coffee. The combination of rake and boy next door added to his appeal, but the trace of scars and mottled skin gave him a ruggedness she desperately wanted to smooth away. “I woke you.”

“Not exactly,” she admitted, rubbing her cheek against the door and leaning on it a little more heavily. Everything ached and she wanted to go back to sleep. “I’m used to getting by on a lot less sleep.” And rolling out of bed to go to work for eight hour shifts that as often as not turned into ten to twelve hours on her feet. “I think I am tireder than I thought.” She yawned the last three words, and when she glanced at him again, his expression softened.

Extending a finger, he traced the line of her cheek and it was a soothing motion, one which had her eyes half-closing in pleasure. “Go back to bed, Colby.” His voice washed over her. “I’ll be in my office working.”

“I can’t laze about in bed all day.” No matter how good it sounded.

“Why not?”

“Because…” She had to go to Florida or at least say her goodbyes. She was a guest and not even an intentional one.  “…Luc. I should probably check on him.”

“He’s fine, the doctor is with him.” The indulgence in his voice evaporated, but the steadiness in his tone remained. “Go sleep. When you wake up, come find me. We’ll have coffee.”

Tempting. So. So. Tempting. “I’m up now…but coffee sounds like heaven. Really, really strong coffee.”

“Double pot? I made one, I can run it through again.”

Colby groaned at the idea. Now that he’d mentioned it, she could smell the coffee. It proved even more alluring than the sweet vanilla and jasmine entwining the pine of his cologne on her pillow. Releasing the door to stretch, she would have thumped her tail if she’d had one. “Yes, please. If it wouldn’t be too much to ask.”

Silence greeted her comment, and she found Brett gazing at her. Rapt admiration in his eyes as he trailed his gaze down her body and up again.

Fuck me… She still only wore a t-shirt and panties and she’d just given him a show. “Crap. Sorry.” Slamming the door shut, she leaned against it. Adrenaline burned through the remaining traces of sleepiness, adrenaline and a healthy dose of lust. Having him look at her like that warmed inside and out.

“Please,” his voice stroked her through the door. “Don’t apologize. I’ll go fix the coffee. Come and find me.”

The invitation had her toes curling and she bit her lip. “I will,” she said, then added in a low whisper. “I promise.”

“I’ll be waiting.”

About Heather Long:

Heather Long

National bestselling author, Heather Long, likes long walks in the park, science fiction, superheroes, Marines, and men who aren’t douche bags. Her books are filled with heroes and heroines tangled in romance as hot as Texas summertime. From paranormal historical westerns to contemporary military romance, Heather might switch genres, but one thing is true in all of her stories—her characters drive the books. When she’s not wrangling her menagerie of animals, she devotes her time to family and friends she considers family. She believes if you like your heroes so real you could lick the grit off their chest, and your heroines so likable, you’re sure you’ve been friends with women just like them, you’ll enjoy her worlds as much as she does.
