I stared as Lili moved with almost mechanical motions, making it seem like she was pausing for small fractions of a second between movements. When she pulled this off perfectly, the sound of the crowd around us surged. I was completely entranced as she continued dancing and her eyes landed on mine. She moved to me and pulled me to her before spinning to press her ass against me again. I wrapped my arms around her waist, resting both my palms flat along her stomach and abdomen as I bent my knees to lower myself while we swayed together. She was so close I could see the beads of sweat running down her neck, the tiny hairs curling along her hairline in an unruly fashion.

I felt the bare skin of her stomach when her shirt rose and my fingers slid underneath, tugging her even closer. She threw her head back and I gripped her hips. Turning her to face me, I lifted her up, my fingers on her backside as she used the position to move against me. Wrapping her legs around my waist, she grabbed the back of my hair with both hands, her nails grazing my scalp. I groaned and pressed my lips to hers again without another coherent thought.

The crowd went crazy when the song ended and Lili blinked, seeming stunned as she looked around. I glanced up from her to a sea of camera phones that no doubt captured Lizzie’s embarrassing ass stomping by Lili. I grinned at her and let her slide slowly down my body but she looked past me.

“And it’s EX-wife, you… repulsive tramp!” Lili stuttered as she spat the words. With an irritated huff, she moved quickly through the crowd. I could barely see the top of her head as she passed through the door toward the street. I glanced at the table to see Tish and Kas were already moving that way so I turned to follow Lili.

“Zane!” Lizzie whined, grabbing my arm. Half an hour ago, I would’ve fought myself not to fall for her shit again but right now, all I could think about was getting to Lili and finding out what the fuck all that was.

“Maybe you should’ve thought twice before you fucked my best friend,” I said as I pulled free of her grasp, rushing after Lili.

A spotlight from somewhere gilded the dancer’s body. He was enthralled by silver anklets that jingled over her small, bare feet. Gilded toenails. Shapely legs flashed between purple veils that floated from a low slung, glittering belt. The belt and top were heavy with swags of shining chains and dangling beadwork.

High, full breasts quivered, lovingly presented in the spangle-studded velvet bra. She arched back, swishing her thick fall of of glossy black hair around. Had to be fake hair, falling to well below her ass. It brushed the curve of her hips. Fanned out as she twirled.

He wanted to rip away all the scraps of filmy cloth and bling. See her bare-assed. Bare-breasted.

The deep curve of her waist was perfectly shaped for his fingers to grip. The curves and hollows of her belly and her hips looked so soft. Touchable.

His hands shook with the urge to reach, stroke. Seize.

The rush of erotic images ramped up his advanced visual processor into screaming overdrive. Even using custom designed shield specs, his AVP combat program was off and running, scrolling a thick column of data analysis past his inner eye.

The light level in this room could zap him right into a stress flashback if he didn’t protect his eyes. Plus, the dark shield strength contact lenses hid the animal flash of amber luminosity caused by his visual implants. Outsiders couldn’t be allowed to see that.

He wanted to throw everyone else out and lock the door. He wanted to gulp in the whole data flow. It was being filtered out in real time and lost forever, and it drove him . . . fucking . . . nuts.

One of Noah’s abilities is that he can see a person’s “energy signature.” His visual implants and augmented visual processing allow him to see colors and shades and subtleties that no one else can. He also has learned to interpret them. So by reading a person’s energy signature, he can sometimes also read their minds.

The dancer’s arms lifted, swayed. Her skin looked fine-grained, dewy and smooth. He inhaled her scent as she spun closer. Fresh, sweet, hot. Sun on the flowers. Rain on the grass.

Since what happened at Midlands, his senses were sharper than normal by orders of magnitude. He was reading her energy signature, right through the shield lenses. A cloud of brilliant moving colors surrounded her.

He felt hot, red. No control over his face. He was stuck here, nailed to the floor while everyone watched him watch her until the uncontrollable sensations subsided. Along with his colossal hard-on.

He had not felt this helpless since Midlands.

Next was Jack. She walked to his corner, gazing into his glowing emerald eyes.

“Emma,” he whispered.

“I’m right here, Emma,” Jack said, drawing her attention back to him.

Jack stood still. She fidgeted. The silk dress clung to her breasts and her narrow waist. Her cage crinoline maintained a respectable space between them, regardless of how much he wanted her closer. He put his hands at the waist of her skirt and felt her tremble. She bit her lower lip. Oh, how he wanted to soothe that lip.

With a gentle tug, he pulled her closer. The motion unbalanced her, and her hands sought his arms. When she still didn’t lean up to kiss him, he brought her even closer, his eyes fixed on her lower lip as her teeth released it.

He wouldn’t meet her halfway. This could be the only time he’d have the advantage, and he didn’t want to waste it. Because Emma’s feet were slightly lifted from the floor, she gripped his arms tightly.

He brought her to him. As he kissed Emma, his tongue traced her lower lip before his mouth enveloped hers. He wanted her to open her mouth, and he prodded the crease between her lips, coaxing her with his tongue. She parted her lips but pulled her head back as his tongue invaded her mouth.

She tasted like strawberries and wine. It was an intriguing taste and he wanted more. She felt soft and warm against him. He knew he was pushing the limits of the game and propriety, but when he glimpsed her eyelashes feathered on her cheek, he almost growled. Abruptly, Jack released Emma and set her on the floor, his hands remaining at her waist. He could feel her shiver as she looked into his face, her eyes wide open. He smiled.

Within a second, she raced away from him as fast as she could in a ladylike manner. Jack smirked. She had enjoyed his kiss. With his head cocked to the side, he walked to the sideboard and poured himself a brandy.

When Emma had stepped away from Jack, she did everything within her power to control her nerves. Her lips felt swollen. His hands had left an impression on her waist—an impression that wasn’t his to make. Her next and last corner was Billy’s. He grinned at her as she tried to maintain a steady gait, but the memory of Jack’s kiss tingled down her spine, making her feel hot and cold simultaneously. Stop it! She gave her head a small shake and stopped, inhaling a large breath before returning Billy’s smile.

But she wanted to kiss Jack.

No, what he did was take advantage of the situation. How vulgar of him! Why did she crave more?

“Is something wrong, Emma?”

Conflicting thoughts clouded her mind, and she didn’t realize she was already in front of Billy. Politely dismissing his concern, she said, “No, no, nothing is wrong.”

Emma was curious about what the higher price might be, but, after Jack’s advances, she ignored it. Composing herself, she met Billy’s lips part way.

He didn’t play with her lips nor press to enter her mouth. In a very gentlemanly manner, he gave her a quick kiss and bowed away. No fire came from his lips as it had from Jack’s. If anything, she was gravely disappointed that Billy hadn’t tried to kiss her like Jack had. She should have been glad, but she wasn’t.

Like a good girl, she placed her hand on his sleeve and let him escort her back to the others. Caroline enticed them all to start charades. Jack was with them, a devilish grin on his face that Emma had the sudden urge to slap. When his glance fell her way, excitement raced through her veins, and she had the strangest sensation her nipples were tightening. Tamping down the fury of emotions Jack caused, she spent the rest of the evening at Billy’s and Caroline’s side and away from Jack.
