LOVEGAME

Synopsis:

True Crime novelist Ian Sharpe has spent his career writing about serial killers for very personal reasons. For his latest exposé, he is taking on the sadistic madman known as the Red Ribbon Strangler, and when his research leads him to Hollywood’s most private and provocative actress, he will break every rule to uncover her truth.

The daughter of one of Hollywood’s golden couples, chased by paparazzi and treated as a commodity her entire life, Veronica Romero wields her sex appeal like a weapon. She expects Ian to be as easy to control as every other man she’s ever known. But from the beginning, he refuses to fall into line. Mysterious and cool, challenging and just a little bit dangerous, Ian somehow makes her feel safe—even as he digs into the deepest secrets of her life and pushes her to the breaking point.

As raw ecstasy gives way to agonized truths, their dark obsession exposes secrets that have been buried for far too long. Ian wants to tear down her walls and heal the sensual woman underneath. But if Veronica’s learned anything, it’s that the line between pleasure and pain is a narrow one—and when caught between them the only thing that matters is how you play the game.

Excerpt:

I take picture after picture, with a vintage champagne glass in my hand or my face buried in a huge bouquet of dahlias. Toward the end, Marc has the stylist and his assistant wrap me up in a long string of artificial belladonna since the real stuff can cause problems if it touches the skin. Then they heap my gloved hands with a mountain of the poisonous black berries and Marc has me hold my hands out to the camera in a deadly macabre offering.

Again and again Marc shoots me like that, taking pictures from every possible angle. On his knees in front of me, looking up. From a ladder above me, looking down. Beside me. Behind me. Across the room. Up close. Again and again he points and clicks. Again and again, I smile and pout and make every other expression he asks for. I even take his suggestion to tilt my head back with my mouth open wide and hold one of the berries between my thumb and index finger as I pretend to be about to drop it in. As I do, I close my eyes and pretend not to be totally icked out.

When I open them two minutes and twenty shots later, the first person I see is Ian. He’s leaning back against one of the mirrored walls and for once his omnipresent notebook is nowhere to be seen. Instead he’s staring straight at me, a half-snarl on his normally calm face and his eyes burning with a mixture of contempt and desire.

It’s the first time I’ve seen anything but pleasant or puzzled interest from him and it has the tiny hairs on the back of my neck standing up. Has ice skating down my spine and a desert taking up residence in my mouth. Because, in that moment, as our eyes lock and his turn impossibly darker, impossibly blacker, I don’t know who he sees. Can’t tell who he wants.

Me or her?

Actress or murderer?

Sentient being or a character he helped create?

It’s just more fuel to add to the fire of my earlier doubts and in that one tense and electric moment, it comes to me. What the cover shot should be.

What I need it to be.

Marc backs off a little, has his assistant come forward with a trash bag for me to throw away the last of the berries and the gloves I’ve been wearing. As she pauses to tie up the bag in front of me, I ask her for a couple wipes.

She quickly returns with a box of baby wipes and I smile my thanks even as Marc instructs me back against the mirror for what he calls “the last series of shots.”

I do as he instructs, but as he’s fiddling with the lighting, I turn toward the mirror and swipe the wipe over the right half of my face.

“What are you doing?” my makeup artist squawks as he comes racing across the room at me.

“Trust me, Dalton,” I tell him as I continue to scrub.

“Stop doing that!” he orders as he grabs on to the end of the wipe and actually tries to wrestle it away from me.

“Just wait,” I instruct, refusing to let go no matter how hard he tugs.

“But—”

“What are you up to, Veronica?” Marc asks. He sounds more intrigued than annoyed.

“I’ll show you,” I tell him, pushing gently at Dalton’s hand until he finally lets go with a whimper.

And then, with the whole room—including Ian—watching me intently, I wipe the entire half side of my face clean of any and all makeup. I do it carefully, making sure that the line that runs down the center of my face is exact so that both sides are completely symmetrical.

When I’m done, I reach up and take off my right earring and hand it to Dalton who still looks slightly shell-shocked. Then I step back and stare at this new reflection of myself in the mirror.

Half me at my most natural, half her at her most armored, it’s a devastating look. Made even more so by the elaborate fifties makeup Dalton has me in—all red lips and thick black liner and long, long lashes.

There is a difference, I tell myself fiercely as I study myself. I am not her. I will never be her, no matter what it felt like four months ago.

In the background I’m aware of Marc cursing softly, of him snapping picture after picture. I don’t turn around, instead continuing to give him my back so that he gets both me and my reflection in each shot.

“Turn around,” he breathes after he’s taken at least three dozen pictures.

Reluctantly, I do as he requests, then follow his impatient gesture for me to move away from the mirror. I step forward and then the camera starts again, clicking away to get the shot from this angle as well.

At that moment, Ian moves and I make the mistake of glancing his way. Our gazes lock and heat slams through me at the look he’s giving me, has my eyes widening and my lips parting on a gasp as I struggle to draw air into lungs that have abruptly forgotten how to work.

“Fuck,” Marc breathes from where he’s narrowing in on my face. “That’s it. That’s the money shot.”

I drag my eyes away from Ian, but it’s too late. For the first time in a very, very long time, I feel vulnerable. And I hate every second of it.

About Tracy Wolff:

Tracy Wolff

New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author Tracy Wolff collects books, English degrees and lipsticks and has been known to forget where—and sometimes who—she is when immersed in a great novel. At six she wrote her first short story—something with a rainbow and a prince—and at seven she forayed into the wonderful world of girls lit with her first Judy Blume novel. By ten she’d read everything in the young adult and classics sections of her local bookstore, so in desperation her mom started her on romance novels. And from the first page of the first book, Tracy knew she’d found her life-long love. Now an English professor at her local community college, she writes romances that run the gamut from sweet contemporary to erotica, from paranormal to Urban Fantasy and from young adult to new adult.

Read an excerpt from SNOW WOLF:

Riding the high of her nearness, Diesel leaned into the force of her hand on his chest. “I know my mate’s scent. I searched for you all over Willow Bend. Why else would Mason send you?” The moment the words left his lips, he reconsidered the phrasing. Her eyes narrowed and her nostrils flared.

I’m a Hunter of Willow Bend. I am here to deliver a message from my Alpha—and I don’t care what century you were born in old man, but we don’t arrange matings. You don’t just get to walk in here, thump your chest and say mine.” The ferocious light in her eyes sent a quiet thrill through his bloodstream. His wolf roused to the hunt, every color and nuance sharpening under their study.

No?” He didn’t want to miss a moment of her reaction. Her dilated pupils constricted even as her mouth tightened. Anger soured her scent and her nails bit into his muscle as he pressed into the contact. Despite a faint tremble, she didn’t shift her grip or attack him. Would she? If he provoked her enough? The idea intrigued the hell out of him. No Alpha wanted a weak mate.

No.” She withdrew the contact then retreated one step. Crowding closer, he refused to let her abandon him. “Dude…get a grip. I came here to do a job.” A muscle in her jaw twitched. “Or maybe you are trying to prove you don’t hold the Yukon?”

Challenge wound through every syllable. Canting his head to the side, he raised one eyebrow and waited.

What? Playing crazy, eccentric keeps the other packs at bay and allows you to dictate the terms of your interactions. You don’t want to talk; you walk away or slam a door. You want to shut me down; you declare I’m yours.” Folding her arms, Ranae raised her chin and, although the gold circle on around her gray-green irises faded, it didn’t diminish completely. “It won’t work and I’m really not interested in the games. We have serious issues to discuss with you, Alpha. You can get on board or be left behind to cope on your own should the Russian packs turn their gaze on your territory and your pack.”

Amusement curved through him. Passionate determination etched into her expression. “Our pack will be fine.”

My pack will be, absolutely. Your pack is debatable.” The aggravation in her scent muted beneath the sting of frustration. “Now you’re baiting me.” Sidestepping him, she tried to put some distance between them. He allowed her three steps before intercepting her again. He wanted her gaze on him, nowhere else. “Seriously, you have a problem.”

No, I have a mate, but continue telling me why our pack is in danger.”

Pausing, her lips tightened and her eyes narrowed. The curl of her fingers into a fist telegraphed her next move. Would she do it? He pressed into her space, and she rewarded his effort with fresh contact in the form of a blow. It caught him square above his heart, and the second with her elbow connected with his jaw. He accepted both blows, but refused to retreat.

Your training is incomplete.” Whatever response she’d been expecting, his comment surprised her. “Otherwise you’d understand that two hits will not take down an enraged male, if you want to escape you have to incapacitate or kill.”

I don’t want to fight you.”

Wonderful. I have no desire to fight you, but if you need to beat on me to make yourself feel better, go right ahead. I’m very sturdy.”

The corner of her mouth kicked into an involuntary smile, and his breath lodged in his throat, the single glimpse of sweetness a better reward than he could have imagined. “Are you insane?”

Depends on your definition of sanity.” The tangle of her hair contrasted with the wool of her pullover. How soft would the strands be? When she failed to respond, he reached out to test his theory. She slapped his hand away, and the sting intrigued him.

Stop.” Command reverberated through the single syllable. “I came here as a messenger, nothing else. Keep your teeth and your hands to yourself. Am I clear?”

In all things, an Alpha could command. He could take a life. He could grant it. Wolves who pledged to an Alpha could be sent into the heart of danger and forfeit all that they owned. The heart, however, could not be commanded nor could he take what she would not willingly give.

His wolf bucked at the rejection, but Diesel withdrew three steps to give her space. Clasping his hands behind his back, he studied the beautiful Hunter before him. She would not tumble easily, nor would she accept his direct pledge. Very well, if he had to learn to court, then he would find what enticed her. “Dress,” he ordered. “Several layers. We will be leaving the guest quarters.”

Expecting obedience, he turned to the entrance and pressed the code to allow Julian entry.

Are you staying with her or leaving?” Her presence was non-negotiable.

Since you asked so nicely…” The Chief Enforcer’s expression barely shifted, yet a smirk echoed beneath his words. “I’d be happy to stay.”

Uninterested in the old wolf’s games, Diesel spared his mate another studying look. Ranae gaped at him, and she hadn’t moved a muscle.

Trust me when I say it will be more comfortable if you get dressed, but if you insist on testing my patience, I’ll happily take care of stripping you first then dressing you.”

The taunt did what the order would not. She moved.

His wolf rose, stretching and raking his claws. Yes, they had the scent of this hunt.

Overview:

Don’t miss the highly anticipated installment in the Wolves of Willow Bend as we travel north to one of the most secretive packs in the U.S.

Ranae is the youngest of the Buckleys— the only girl among three powerful male siblings. Her restlessness and dominant nature affected her every relationship within Willow Bend, not to mention testing the patience of her Alpha. Apprenticeship to the Hunters fed her desire for a purpose. When her Alpha and eldest brother ask her to undertake a mission to the Yukon territory, she’s thrilled at the opportunity to be useful. Clashing with the Diesel was the last thing she expected on the dangerous assignment.

Diesel, the oldest Alpha in the U.S. packs, lives a gray existence. The loss of his mate so many decades ago wears away at him until he doesn’t give a damn about anything. The problems of the other packs are not his, and he prefers to be left in isolation. The arrival of the Chief Enforcer annoys him, but it is the wolf traveling with him who wakes the predator in Diesel. The scent of mate clings to her, but she rejects his overtures and challenges him on every level.

War may be coming for the Yukon, but Diesel’s battle is very personal…

Tammy Review

Wow Heather wrote another great book in this series. We watch a Diesel tries to win his mate. We see the struggle and how she is trying to deal with her anger. Will she leave Willows Bend? Will they find out why all the clans are being attacked? Will they find any leads? Will Julian find his white rabbit?

I received an ARC version of this book in exchange for an honest review.

GUEST POST

Keeping a Series Fresh: It’s all Wolf to Me

One of the more difficult challenges for readers and authors alike when it comes to a series is how do you keep it fresh? How do you return to the same well over and over again? And what point does a series become…eek…boring?

I’ve read a lot of series over the years, the ones I enjoy the most are the ones which give me a reason to come back, but aren’t repetitive. They may possess an ongoing set of story arcs, but each book propels us forward and focuses on the couple at hand, on their journey.

Keeping Willow Bend New

Every book in the Wolves of Willow Bend series is a “first” book because for the couple I’m focusing on, it’s their first book, it’s their story. I keep the focus on them, and reintroduce only those key elements from the series that are vital to understanding the current couple’s tale.

It sounds easy, and sometimes it is. Other times, it’s hard. Readers who follow the series will obviously get more because they know the history, and have met earlier characters, followed the twists and turns of their stories and seen more of the world fleshed out.

Each book adds a new layer or dimension to the world itself. We’re exploring the world together. Every character presents their perspective, offers a window on the world to give us their view and expands the image.

Unique Perspective

So how do you keep it fresh? Since the first time I read a book and discussed it with a friend, one truth has underscored both my reading and my writing—no two readers experience the same book the same way. We each bring to the table a set of unique experiences and viewpoints. I may respond emotionally to triggers that you nod to and say yes, that was sad, but I didn’t sob whereas another reader may cry buckets because it reminded them of their own loss.

Understanding how our experiences inform our reactions helps me to weave each tale by viewing the world only through the eyes of my main characters. For example, what may have made Wolf Claim’s Gillian shy away from confrontation could simply piss off River Wolf’s Colby while what is absolutely vital to Untamed Wolf’s Dylan may only be a nuisance to Rogue Wolf’s Salvatore.

Every character’s existence is vital to their point of view, what they will react to, what they need, and more—what they want. So while these characters—these people live in the same world, maybe even in the same pack, their experiences aren’t the same. So every book whether it’s number 1 or number 15 in the series is their first book.

From Supporting to Lead

One element which helps me in my strive to keep each tale in the Willow Bend series fresh includes the supporting cast of characters—more it’s rotating leading characters from one book to supporting characters of another. It lets us revisit previous heroes and heroines while also offering a way to introduce future issues. In addition to rotating the cast, I can use natural relationships to show how these characters interact.

We know Gillian and Owen are important to Brett, they are also important to Mason. It’s natural for them to appear in books where these characters are pivotal. Claire Buckley spent time in Sutter Butte, her appearance in Desert Wolf is organic as is being joined by her mate, Tyler. Tyler has links to A.J. and Linc—they’re his brothers…call it my Six Degrees of Willow Bend…those connections flesh out the world, the story and they give me ideas for future tales as well as upcoming twists and turns we may or may not be expecting.

Overall Arcs

While the series has continuing world arcs, each book focuses on a particular set of characters. They are our window, and give us their view of what is happening to the greater world while we are engaged in their tale. Each piece of the puzzle provides us with another clue to where we are going and who will be guiding us on the next part of the journey. The best part of the series is the characters that appear as a momentary distraction, but prove to be a meatier hook for the future.

What keeps a series fresh for you?

National bestselling author, Heather Long, likes long walks in the park, science fiction, superheroes, Marines, and men who aren’t douche bags. Her books are filled with heroes and heroines tangled in romance as hot as Texas summertime. From paranormal historical westerns to contemporary military romance, Heather might switch genres, but one thing is true in all of her stories—her characters drive the books. When she’s not wrangling her menagerie of animals, she devotes her time to family and friends she considers family. She believes if you like your heroes so real you could lick the grit off their chest, and your heroines so likable, you’re sure you’ve been friends with women just like them, you’ll enjoy her worlds as much as she does.

Smut AMAZON - CopyWhat happens when the kink between the pages leads to heat between the sheets?

All Blake Crawford wants is to pass his creative writing course, get his university degree and take over his dad’s ailing family business. What Amanda Newland wants is to graduate at the top of her class, as well as finally finish her novel and prove to her family that writing is a respectful career.

What Blake and Amanda don’t want is to be paired up with each other for their final project but that’s exactly what they both get when they’re forced to collaborate on a writing piece. Since Amanda thinks Blake is a pushy asshole (with a panty-melting smirk and British accent) and Blake thinks Amanda has a stick up her ass (though it’s brilliant ass), they fight tooth and nail until they discover they write well together. They also might find each other really attractive, but that’s neither here nor there.

When their writing project turns out to be a success, the two of them decide to start up a secret partnership together using a pen name, infiltrating the self-publishing market in the lucrative genre of erotica. Naturally, with so much heat and passion between the pages, it’s not long before their dirty words become a dirty reality. Sure, they still fight a lot but at least there’s make-up sex now.

But even as they start to fall hard for each other, will their burgeoning relationship survive if their scandalous secret is exposed or are happily-ever-afters just a work of fiction?

She holds my gaze for a moment and something passes over her. Regret, maybe. Then she nods. “Sit down. Let’s work.”
And so we do. And for the first time in a long time, it’s strained. I’m about to suggest maybe we need the Estonian vodka anyway when she lets out an exasperated sigh over something she’s reading.
It happens to be something I wrote.
“What?” I ask, wondering what I did wrong.
She gives me the the ‘are you kidding me?’look. “Okay, I was ignoring it earlier but I think you need to get a grip on some of this shit. This simply does not happen.”
“Explain, please.”
“I just think it’s unrealistic for there to be so much talking, let alone the fact that the first time they do it it’s in a public place.”
“Too much talking?”
“Yeah.” she scans over the document. “You know, give me your cock, oh you feel so good, harder, harder, you’re so big, fuck me harder big boy.”
“Have you even had good sex?” I ask incredulously.
She flinches. “Of course I have. And it’s none of your business.”
“We’re writing about sex. It’s completely my business. I’m not letting you interject your edits based on your personal experiences about sex because believe me, if the sex is good, you’re moaning my name.”
She raises her chin. “Maybe all those girls were faking it.”
Oh, brilliant.
“Excuse me?” I say, hands pressed against the table, nearly getting out of my chair. “You have no idea. I pride myself in giving a girl as many bloody orgasms as she can handle.”
“Bloody orgasms don’t sound like fun,” she jokes softly.
“They can be if you’re into knife play,” I tell her, even though that’s not exactly what I meant. Still, she scrunches up her nose. “Don’t knock it until you try it, but that’s neither here nor there. When you were with Alan, he must have made you come at least a few times.”
If he didn’t, I feel like finding the guy and showing him a thing or two for wasting four years of her life.
“Yeah,” she says flatly.
“And in the middle of that orgasm, didn’t you want to yell a few things?”
“Sometimes.”
“And why didn’t you?”
She looks at her nails as if they’re suddenly fascinating. “It didn’t seem right. It was…too intimate. I would have felt dumb. He didn’t like any of that stuff.”
The plot thickens. “Any of what stuff?”
“Sex that didn’t involve the missionary position or the bed.”
My mouth drops open. My brain and penis can’t compute this. “I feel so sorry for you.”
We must remedy this.
She glares at me. “It’s not like I didn’t want to do it. I did. And he did try it. Most of it. But it always went back to the same old.”
I knew it. She’s a nerd on the streets and a freak in the sheets.
“I don’t mean to brag,” I tell her in all seriousness. “But you do realize that I could give you an orgasm in thirty seconds.”
Her eyes widen. I can’t tell if she’s horrified or intrigued. “I don’t believe you and I don’t want you to try.”
She’s not getting it. I frown, trying to explain. “If you’re having good sex and it’s with someone you’re comfortable with, you won’t worry about holding back. You’ll cry out all the nonsense you want, you’ll make noises like a pig and scream like you’re on fire because you truly can’t have a good orgasm unless you’re letting go on all accounts.” I lean back in my chair and study her, running my fingers along my jaw. “I would venture that every time you came with your ex, you were only experiencing half of what you should have been. How is it with your vibrators?”
I expect her to tell me to fuck off, that I’m getting too personal but to my surprise she gives me a small smile. “It’s better. But I do have a roommate with exceptionally good hearing.” She clears her throat. “Anyway, so I guess I’m wrong. The heroine can make all the noise she wants.”
“And have first time sex in public.”
“I don’t know…”
“Believe me, when you finally get a chance to fuck, you don’t care where it is. That’s why I always have a condom in my pocket. And the more public the sex, the sneakier you have to be, the hotter it is.”
“But in the book you would never get caught.”
“You don’t always get caught in real life too.”
I can see she wants to ask me where I’ve done it but she loses her nerve. “Okay.” She looks back to the document. “I accept defeat.”
But I don’t want her to. I want to prove to her I’m right and not have her take my word.
Is there a non-creepy way to show her just how amazing good sex can feel? I’m thinking not.
Or…maybe there is.

Keeping his distance is a lot easier when she’s not parading through his house wearing nothing but his sweatshirt. No matter how hard he tries to reform, he’s not a saint.

The more Ken tries to convince her of his rotten core, the more Bethany believes in his innate goodness. But until she can convince him to believe in himself, he will continue to push her out of his life.

Excerpt One:

I need you to fix something for me, but you have to promise not to freak out.” Bethany Wilkerson closed her eyes as she danced cheek to cheek with Ken Hawkins, their forced coupling as groomsman and bridesmaid at her best friend’s wedding having evolved until they’d become inseparable over the course of the evening.

You can’t shock me, babe. I’ve seen it all.” He chuckled.

The corresponding, reassuring vibration strumming through her chest convinced her to throw the last of her misgivings aside and go for it. She wanted him to be the one. After tonight, he’d return to Chicago, and she’d still be living in her mother’s house in Regret Hollow in southeastern Wisconsin. She lifted her head so she could look him in the eye. “I’ve never had an orgasm.”

Deep-green eyes flaring, he choked out a strangled sound. “Never?”

I can’t wait for you to be my first.” She hugged him tighter.

Within her embrace, he recoiled. “Are you a virgin?”

No, of course not. I’ve had lovers.” A whole two of them. “But no orgasm.”

He didn’t need to know she’d never had one because she was boring in bed. Worse, she couldn’t even work up the nerve to attempt to pleasure herself. Before today, they’d been mere acquaintances, but from the moment he’d kissed her in the limo after the ceremony, she’d known that going to bed with Ken would be anything but boring.

I need you to help me fix this. Tonight.” She kissed his chin then caressed up to his lips.

He turned his head and clamped his hands on her waist, holding her away from him. “Babe, that’s the wine talking. You don’t want me. I’m no good for you.”

So what if she was plastered? The alcohol had simply lowered her inhibitions enough for her to admit what she wanted. “I’m not drunk. I’ve only had three glasses of wine.”

Which is—what? Two glasses more than usual?”

Three glasses more, to be honest. The one time she had tried to enjoy a bottle of wine in her bedroom, Mom had scolded and fretted so much Bethany had limited her consumption to ordering a glass when she went out with friends. No surprise that she couldn’t get worked up enough to touch herself in her mother’s house either. At thirty-two years old, she’d become a teetotaler spinster who’d never had an orgasm and lived in her childhood bedroom.

Allowing her life to continue along its pathetic trajectory was not an option, especially while she danced with the sexiest man who’d ever given her a second glance. Not only had he kissed her during the ride to the reception, he’d danced with her all night, far exceeding any obligation he had to stay by her side. “Tonight, I’m cutting loose—with you.”

His jaw tightened. “I’m not taking advantage of you while you’re drunk or going along with something you’ll regret in the morning.”

Who regrets having an orgasm?”

Teaser Goodness

Excerpt Two:
“Good thing I can cook.”

Surprise and pleasure lit up her face. “You can? Let me get the laundry started, and I’ll help you.”

Sounds like a plan,” he choked out, fisting his hands at his sides to avoid hauling her to him for a branding kiss. With a flight or two of stairs separating them, he might have a prayer of resisting her.

After she turned away and her footsteps faded down the stairs, he stripped out of his business casual clothes into the cruddiest sweats and T-shirt he owned. If she saw him dressed like someone she’d cross the street to avoid, maybe she’d treat him the same way and he’d remember to keep his distance.

A few minutes later, he stood in the kitchen pulling chicken breasts from the refrigerator. Her footsteps marched up the stairs from the laundry room. Stay cool. Stay calm. Stay far away from temptation.

Ken.”

Closing the fridge, he straightened and faced her. His sweatshirt hung down her shoulders, ridiculously long and baggy as he’d hoped, but then stopped far too high on her smooth, pale thighs. Why the hell hadn’t he offered her some pants? “What?” he snarled.

She stepped back, her smile faltering. Yes damn it, she should be scared of him. Her mother had been right to warn her away. “Do you have any laundry you want me to add to the load?”

No!” She’d been in his house for all of five minutes. She was supposed to be his guest, not his live-in partner.

The clothes you were wearing earlier need to be washed, right?”

I’ll do it another time.” When she wasn’t standing in front of him, turning his boring sweatshirt into an X-rated fantasy, leaving him begging to trail his lips down her bare legs.

It’s no trouble. My load is so small, running it as is doesn’t seem worth it.” Ignoring his answer, she headed up the stairs.

Ken reached into the freezer and pulled out a handful of ice. Rubbing it around his neck, he hoped the chill would creep south in a hurry. Maybe he should lie down in the road for an hour or two. His body heat would melt the ice all the way to Wisconsin.

She had no freaking idea what she did to him. Meanwhile, his sweatpants clearly displayed the evidence. She wouldn’t remain blind to it if he didn’t get the rest of his body to follow his brain’s blaring reminder that she was pure, innocent, and completely off-limits.

Upon completing medical school, Colleen attended residency at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland and was on base in Washington, DC during 9/11. Excerpt:

The snowball hit the back of my head dead-on. Bam.

I stumbled forward from the force of the blow. The flakes created a halo of white powder around my head in the cool, crisp air then settled all over my face and neck.

What the…oh no he didn’t. A growl rose in my throat. I turned to confront my foe. I creased my eyebrows and I glared at him, mean-like.

With a smug expression on his face, Marin stared back, tossing another snowball between his hands.

Elizabeth, you appeared distracted. I wanted to help.” His voice was smooth, deep like aged rum, and echoed in the unique way of his people, the Fost, almost like he was being dubbed. The sound got me every time causing me to shiver, or maybe it was the snow dripping down my back.

That was helping?” My ass.

Yes, you were about to walk into a tree,” he said dryly, dropping his ammunition.

I whipped around. Sure enough, a tree loomed in front of me. Dark-gray bark, feathery fronds interspersed with lethal spikes, blue moss climbing its trunk. Yep, that was a tree. Well for here anyway, not like on Earth.

I glanced back at Marin, who stood so trustingly under the boughs of another nearby tree laden with snow. A smile tugged at the corner of my mouth. See, I could help too. He looked hot, literally and figuratively.

Okay, thanks.”

With a thought, my power twisted deep inside, and I sent out a burst of air through the branches. They shuddered in response and unloaded their cold, wet contents on Marin’s head with nary a sound.

Excerpt:

Back up for a moment,” Blake said, and all heads turned to him. “Getting the lotus seeds and the milk from Helios’s cattle sounds crazy, but feasible. But the blood of a slain hydra? I know we’ve been practicing with our powers and weapons for a month—and we’ve gotten pretty good at it, too—but the hydra is one of the most dangerous creatures out there. Slaying it was one of Hercules’s twelve labors. What if one of us gets hurt? Or worse?”

I didn’t know if I was imagining it or not, but I could have sworn that his gaze drifted to mine when he’d said that last part. It was like he was saying that he didn’t want me getting hurt. My cheeks heated at the thought, and I focused on my hands, unable to look at Blake without my feelings for him showing on my face for everyone else to see.

Hercules was one person,” Chris pointed out. “We’re five.”

Actually, Hercules didn’t slay the hydra on his own,” Kate said. “He needed help from his nephew.”

But neither of them had powers like ours.” Chris rubbed his hands together, his confidence not wavering. “We’ve got this.”

Oh, I know we can slay the hydra.” Blake crossed his arms, as if offended that anyone had thought he’d doubted our abilities. “We just need to make sure that we all get back here alive.”

AveryFlynn

Award-winning romance author Avery Flynn has three slightly-wild children, loves a hockey-addicted husband and is desperately hoping someone invents the coffee IV drip. Avery was a reader before she was a writer and hopes to always be both. She loves to write about smartass alpha heroes who are as good with a quip as they are with their *ahem* other God-given talents. Her heroines are feisty, fierce and fantastic. Brainy and brave, these ladies know how to stand on their own two feet and knock the bad guys off theirs.

HUP Teaser1
The strain in Dom’s voice could have been from her escape attempts, but Elle doubted it. The bastard wasn’t even breathing hard. Time to switch tactics. Instead of sinking her nails into the steel band he disguised as an arm, she inhaled a deep breath. As her lungs expanded, her boobs pressed against his forearm. He went perfectly still. Interesting. Now this was something she could work with. He could overpower her in a heartbeat, so she had to use whatever tools were at her disposal to distract, disarm, and defend. If Mr. Hard Body got a hard-on, that could very well be her ticket to freedom.

She lifted her chin, letting her left cheek rub against his hard pec as she tilted her face upward, and tugged at her bottom lip with her teeth as if she was a little slow and trying to work out all of the confusing details when in reality she was already ten moves ahead. “So while the world thinks of you as a real-life Bruce Wayne with hundreds of millions in the bank and models draped across your arm, you’re really Batman, aligned with the Resistance, and you kidnapped me for my own good?”

Exactly,” he said.

Isn’t that what an assassin would say in such circumstances?” She batted her eyelashes.

He narrowed his gaze, but his lips twitched as if he were fighting off a smile. Shit. That might have been a step too far. Sometimes dialing down the drama proved harder than expected, but it was too late to pivot from her course now. She needed a second or two to break free—after that she’d figure it out.

HUP Teaser 4

If you were on my hit list,” he said, his voice low and soft, “you’d have been dead before you even got to ask me my inseam.”

Thirty-four. The number popped in her head faster than an appropriate response.

And if by ‘such circumstances’ you mean totally under my control…” His fingers brushed her hip as he dipped his head lower so his lips almost brushed her ear. “If that was the case, then I can’t say I’d really be looking for talk.”

His words tickled her sensitive skin, heated her flesh, and made her mouth go dry. Then he shifted his stance and something hard, long, and thick brushed against her ass before moving away. She dropped her gaze and bit her lip for real this time. It was either that or moan in protest. The man had a smart mouth, a hard body, and questionable motives. In short, he was exactly what made her panties melt.

Are you sure you really want to play this game with me?” Dom asked, his lips so close to her ear she could practically feel them. “I promise, I’m much better at it than you.”

Pick A Princess

Avery Flynn

Thanks so much for having me over today to talk sexy romance, runaway princesses and hot billionaires with secret lives as resistance fighters…in other words, His Undercover Princess. Not really, we have more important things to chat about. You see I was suppose to talk about my favorite princess but I couldn’t choose between my top two. So I need your help.

Break out your tiaras, ladies and gents, it’s time for the pick your favorite princesses cage match.

SOME SPOILERS AHEAD

In this corner we have Princess Anne (played by Audrey Hepburn) from Roman Holiday. In Rome for some royal engagements, she’s bored with the whole princess gig and wants to live a little. She ditches her tiara and decides to have an unscheduled Roman adventure. On the way, she meets a reporter and photographer who know she’s a princess in disguise as a commoner and play along acting as her guides figuring they’ll have a killer exclusive. Of course, things don’t work out that way when the princess and the reporter fall in love. Princess Anne has to decide between a life of royal duty and running off with her true love.

In the other corner is Princess Buttercup (played by Robin Wright) in Princess Bride. She’s a spoiled farmer’s daughter who falls in love with the farmhand Wesley, who’s kidnapped and killed by the Dread Pirate Roberts. Heartbroken she agrees to marry the douchebag Prince Humperdinck when she’s kidnapped by brigands and rescued by the pirate who killed her true love, Wesley. The horror! But shortly after discovering that the pirate in question is actually Wesley, they’re separated by Prince Douchebag who’s plan is to off the princess right after their married. It’s up to Wesley to rescue her before the wedding.

It’s up to you readers? Which princess reigns supreme in the diamond crusted octagon?

While you decided, check out His Undercover Princess the first in my Tempt Me series:

Exclusive Excerpt:

Her index finger found the button and lowered the window a crack.

Immediately, he raised his hands. “I’m not going to hurt you. I’m unarmed.”

Always good to hear. She cocked her head, perplexed. “Who are you?”

Nick Geary.” Unsmiling, a muscle worked in his jaw. He held her hostage with his eyes. “We need to talk.”

Her heart tripped. No doubt about it. She’d never heard of any Nick Geary, never seen this man before in her life. Or had she? Why didn’t she know? Shouldn’t she? What could they possibly need to talk about? A new kind of panic engulfed her. She pounced on the button, closed the window, and laid on her horn.

Scowling, he mouthed some kind of oath.

The driver door swung open on the truck in front of her. A portly man with a bush of a gray beard got out, lumbered over. Squinted at her. “You okay?” he bellowed as he tugged a T-shirt sporting a Confederate flag over his girth. “This guy messin’ with you?”

Yeah, he was messing with her all right. Air. She needed air. She locked eyes with Nick. His were blue and crystalline, as placid as they’d been stormy. He reached around his neck to finger a shiny stone the green of spring grass, nestled under his collar on what appeared to be a thin leather strap.

It glowed with ember-like intensity. She watched, fascinated.

I-279 South, idling engines, the car radio somewhere behind her booming its bass—all of it receded like floodwater after a storm.

Libby stood on the porch of the cabin she and her father rented for a week every summer. He came around the corner, fairly glowing. Pink with health. Dad. He slung a fishing rod over his shoulder and winked. “Let’s go catch us a mess of crappies.” The creek, ten feet away, rushed over rocks and fallen trees, its path clear, sure. The sun warmed her face and the air soothed her. She breathed in the scent of earth, burgeoning with spring.

She blinked. Snippets of music and phone conversations littered the highway around her. Libby gaped, unable to speak, like she’d shot down a hill on a roller coaster and banked the curve of the next.

Nick said nothing, his eyes still locked on hers.

Ford Truck shot him a dirty look, then clambered over to her side of the car. “Lady, I said, you okay?” he yelled.

Shaking, she lowered her window, not sparing him a glance. “Yeah, yeah, I’m okay.”

You sure?”

Yeah.”

Muttering something about the country going to hell in a handbasket, Ford Truck stomped back to his pickup and climbed inside.

Still staring at Nick, she clung fast to her resolve before it escaped her. Reaching across the seat, she yanked on the handle, and pushed open the passenger door.

Get in.”

Synopsis:

Aspiring author, Nate Wilson wants some space from his overbearing family and a job he doesn’t like. A week on the Oregon coast sounds like paradise and just what he needs to get the creative juices flowing. Unfortunately, his plans are derailed when a storm moves in and a ghostly figure flashes in his headlights, sending him skidding off the road and into a tree. Lucky for him, he ends up in front of a Bed and Breakfast, and the beautiful owner may do more to spur his creativity than any beach could.

Hesitant witch and inn owner, Haylee Clark is cursed. Well, not her exactly—at least not yet—but all of the women in her family have suffered the same fate. They fell in love, only to have that passion turn sour and their husbands die tragically, leaving them brokenhearted. So far, Haylee has done well to avoid that destiny, but when the captivating Nate Wilson crashes into her life, he awakens something within her that she never thought to feel.

When the pair stumbles upon a hidden room where Haylee’s grandmother used to conduct her rituals, they unknowingly unleash a dark entity hell-bent on destruction, and discover that a family heirloom is the source of the Clark family curse. Despite the spell, they can’t deny their attraction, and give in to the magic between them. But the closer Haylee and Nate get, the more the curse tries to tear them apart. If they don’t find a way to defeat the evil, they may lose more than their hearts.
