 Excerpt

Excerpt from His Assurance (Assured Distraction #3)
© Thia Finn 2016

I wrapped around her allowing the perfect tits to scrape lightly up and down my pecs. The warm water added another layer of sensation as the pink tips pebbled. Under the moonlight, they looked like heaven slightly bobbing in the water against my chest. I backed off enough to take one of the stiff peaks in my mouth tonguing and sucking it until I felt her move against my waist, trying to cause more friction where she needed it.

“We need to move this party of two so I can touch bottom. I want to be able to get to all of you.” I maneuvered our warm, wet bodies up the slope. She still had to bounce a little on her tiptoes, keeping her a little off-balance. I liked it because it gave me more control. I put her hands beside her head on the coping, so she held herself above the water.

“Hold on, MaCheri.”

I went under water and found the low riding shorts that had been driving me crazy all day. When she moved the right way, a little strip of tanned skin peeked out to tease me. I couldn’t resist nipping around her navel ring that slightly dangled as I unbuttoned the offenders and slid those tiny panties off at the same time. Lightly sliding my index finger over her bare lips without breaking the seam, I heard her give a little gasp at the tender touch. Between the friction from before and those sexy noises she made, my dick was standing at full attention, waiting his turn.

I replaced my finger with my tongueand broke the surface of the water as I ran my tongue up her midline from pussy to chin. The scorching look she gifted me with made him harden even more. Damn, I needed this girl and her sweet pussy.

I stood and looked down at her. “Damn Lola, you are so beautiful.”

blurb

He’s a household name. Posters of his tattooed body are plastered across bedroom walls from San Francisco to Singapore. Women want to be with him. Men want to be him. He’s brash, bold, and bossy as hell, and he is about to become my employer and my step-brother, which wouldn’t be so bad; except …

He’s already been my lover.

Hot Scoop Magazine’s Sexiest Performer Alive, Sean ‘Shag’ Steal, is the front-man for Crude Element, the hottest band on the scene. With every song he pens, blazing up the charts, he’s got the world at his feet.

Attempting to change his public image as a kinky, womanizing pig, hasn’t stopped his wayward ways. I should know.

He played me his music. He played with my body. And he played with my heart, leaving it tattered in tiny painful pieces, nearly broken beyond repair.

I was finally putting the pieces back together, when his mother and my father decide to blindside us. They’re getting married!

Could things get any worse? The answer to that question is a resounding yes.

Pushed by my dad to replace Shag’s former PA, I find myself working for the one man who lives to torment me. He won’t take ‘no’ for an answer, and he always gets what he wants. This time he wants me back in his bed, at least until our parents say, ‘I do.’ I have to resist. There is no way I can handle another heartbreak.

If only he hadn’t earned his silly nickname because of his ‘shagging’ skills, resisting would be so much easier.

Warning: This book is for mature audiences and contains sexual situations, language, and subject matters some readers may find offensive. If you like dark, damaged bad boys, you’re in the right place.

Excerpt

Excerpt from Bad Beats © C.L. Riley 2016
The lights on the small stage explode to life, revealing the band. I don’t waste a second looking at anyone but Shag. He’s all I see, bathed in a blue spotlight and looking like the rock god he’s been referred to so often.

“Welcome winners!” he yells, as if he’s on massive stage, in a stadium of thousands, not a room with three hundred people.

The audience cheers their approval.

“Let’s fucking rock this ship right out of the water!”

And they do.

For the next hour, Shag and his band weave a web of musical madness that’s impossible to resist. Shag’s the spider, luring us in with his dark and dangerous persona. He’s an impeccable front-man, giving the audience everything they could possibly want and then some.

More than once his smoldering gaze finds mine and he grins. Another time he winks. There is no hiding his interest. Shag Steal may be entertaining everyone else, but he’s enticing me with a personal performance that has my heart racing and my panties damp.

Just so you know, I’ve read more than a few romance novels where the heroine refers to her wet panties. I always discarded the over-used reference as an exaggeration specific to the genre.

Now I know the books were right and I was wrong. Damp panties are real, and I’m wearing them.

I’m also positive I am not the only one in desperate need of a cold shower, especially with Shag looking like he does. His bare chest and six-pack glisten with sweat, drawing my gaze to his body-hugging leathers, a different pair than he wore during the Portland concert. They lace up the front, reminiscent of David Lee Roth’s signature eighties style.

But what makes the pants so hot is the way Shag fills them. He’s packing some serious size beneath those laces. The drool-worthy bulge is even bigger than I remember from that first, hometown show. Considering at this venue his crotch is just a few feet from my face, it’s no wonder he seems larger than life.

Two songs ago, he tossed me his t-Shirt, and I’m clinging to the sweaty garment like it’s my life preserver. Every few seconds, his uniquely male scent drifts up from the shirt, adding to my desire. It takes all my self-control to resist the insane urge to bury my nose in the cool cotton.

Robin isn’t helping matters. She keeps passing me straight shots. I don’t do straight shots. At least I didn’t use to.

Because of those shots, I’ve surpassed the tipsy phase, something that’s happened more in the past week than in the last year. The night we used our gift cards to shop for the cruise, I was buzzed. By the pool today, I was feeling no pain. And now…now I’m ready to seduce Shag and worry about the emotional price tag tomorrow.

So much for my stance on limiting any self-indulgent behavior…I’m failing miserably in that regard and can’t make myself care. What I do care about is the man who owns the stage and perhaps even a tiny piece of me.

His next words lodge in my heart, like an arrow from Cupid’s bow, sending a surge of heat spiraling through me. I lean into Robin, and she nudges me, a mischievous glint in her eyes.

“I’d like to play you a song I wrote while most of you were enjoying a kick ass meal. My band doesn’t know about it yet, and I don’t have a title. I hope you’re cool with an acoustic version of what I believe is a future hit. Did I mention I’m turning into a certified cat lover?”

Robin pokes me. “Cat lover, huh? Whatever could he mean?”

I take the shot glass from her and throw back my head, letting the bitter liquid burn a fiery trail down my throat. “Maybe he likes felines,” I tease back.

She raises her brow and I stick out my tongue.

Someone from Shag’s crew brings him a stool and hands over a guitar, putting an end to our banter.

The room quiets and chairs shuffle as people sit. Robin pulls me down with her, giving my thigh a pat. I sink into the cushions, keeping my gaze trained on Shag. He adjusts the instrument, his expression thoughtful.

After what feels like forever, he looks up and shoots us his trademark smirk. It doesn’t matter that he’s about to premiere a song he wrote while I was napping and everyone else was eating, he appears cool and utterly confident.

He fixes his gaze on me and strums his fingers across the guitar’s strings, launching into a soulful rock ballad that makes my arm hairs stand up and take notice. Goosebumps trail over my skin and I’m immediately lost in the lyrics.

The song is about a man longing for a woman so bad it hurts. He refers to the woman as Cat and makes use of several clever word plays to insert some petting and purring references into the story. Rather than being cheesy, the cat contrasts add a hint of humor to an otherwise serious song of seduction and bring a unique twist to a tale about a tormented man desperate for a torrid affair with a woman he should leave alone.

Mentions of emerald eyes and a red halo of hair…his very own Tabby Cat, eliminate any mystery about who he’s longing for.

He. Wants. Me.

He doesn’t know it yet, but he’s going to get me.

Tonight.

Just the thought of us together sends a coil of heat through my core. I shift, trying to relieve the pressure and refocus my attention on the lyrics not the ache between my legs.

The verse that touches me most describes how the woman he wants is out of his league and explains he is no good for her, and then goes on to clarify that in the end he will corrupt her, destroying her innocence.

Had the lyrics been lacking, it wouldn’t have mattered, because Shag’s voice is intoxicating, like the finest wine, aged to perfection. It wraps around me like a lush fur blanket, caressing my soul and making me realize how much I want to be corrupted, as long as it’s Shag doing the corrupting.

The man has far more going for him than simple charisma and charm, and he’s not just talented, he’s undeniably gifted. He shines brighter than any star and easily makes the sun pale in comparison to the energy that emanates from him. As for sex appeal, he has it in spades, no one could ever question his shameless sensuality, but it’s more than that.

I’ve seen sexy, talented men before but none who have affected me the way Shag Steal is affecting me now. I feel like I’m the only woman in the world who can satisfy his insatiable appetite, and I’m convinced he alone is the one man who can quench my thirst. It’s as if I’ve been wandering in the desert and he’s the oasis, a place of refuge and release.

There is no denying that whatever this thing is between us has me spellbound. I can’t explain it and I don’t want to. The mystery adds to the magic, making me tremble all over. If I sit here another second, I’m afraid I’ll melt. Robin will have to scrape me off the floor.

Not sure how to handle the tsunami of sensations, I bolt from the loveseat, desperate to find a safe harbor where I can compose myself in the midst of the storm.

The women’s restroom is the closest sanctuary I can think of. So I make a beeline through the audience, trying not to step on any feet along the way. Sadly, I’m not successful. I stumble, and someone, thank God, keeps me from a face plant.

Mumbling an apology, I keep moving, determined to escape what now feels like a room full of vultures eager to pick me to pieces.

When I finally enter the hallway that leads to the bathrooms, my legs turn to JELL-O. Slumping against the wall, I struggle to stay upright.

Rough hands grab my shoulders and I’m yanked against a hard body. At first I think its Shag, but the smell is all wrong. After spending time practically snorting his shirt, I’m confident in my ability to recognize his scent.

This man smells like whisky and musk, a combination that turns my stomach.

“Where are you running off to? We’ve got unfinished business.”

“What…?” My mind is foggy and doesn’t compute his comment, thanks to all the shots.

“Poolside, this morning. Your friend chased me off before I could tell you how much I like women like you.”

Placing my palms against his chest, I push. “Women like me?”

“Full-figured, sexy, and trying to pretend like they don’t want it.”

The fog clears just enough for me to process his words, and I’m pissed. I know I should be afraid, considering he has me pinned against a wall, but instead I’m seeing red. This asshole just called me fat and accused me of cock-blocking.

I do what any insulted woman would, knee him in the groin.

Only problem, I miss. Now he’s angry and running his mouth.

“You little bitch. You think that rock-star likes you. Please. You should feel lucky I want to fuck you.”

This time, I stomp on his foot. I don’t miss and he yelps, releasing me.

Before I can think to move, Omar, Shag’s security guard, the one who walked me to my first ever meal onboard, is between me and Mr. Stalker, shoving him back.

A second later, a shirtless blur appears.

My vision is tunneling and I’m not sure what’s happening. I think the blur is Shag, which makes no sense since I still hear music. Closing my eyes, I try to fight the dizziness that I suspect is a result of the booze. I’ve lost count of how many shots I swallowed down.

I’m pretty sure I’m going to throw up.

Yep. I am.

Unable to stop the inevitable, I bow over and spew out the cause of my distress.

With my stomach empty, I slide down the wall and land on my ass, right before the world goes dark.

 Interview

About C.L. Riley’s ‘Backstage/Groupie Days’

Concert Groupie Collage

When was the first time you went backstage? What band was it?

The first time I went backstage was in 1979. I was fourteen. I know. I know. I lied about my age a lot and looked way older. The concert was in Portland, OR, at the Paramount Theatre. The band was The Cars.

Who was your first rock-star crush? Did you ever meet that person?

My first crush was Paul Stanley, from KISS; I was just 10 when I plastered my walls with KISS posters. My first rock album was KISS Alive. And yes, I did meet Paul Stanley and KISS. It was during the timeframe when they had stopped wearing their makeup…bummer.

Did you know anyone before they were famous?

When I was around fifteen, Courtney Love lived in Portland, OR, and hung out with our ‘group.’ We went to some concerts together, danced at the same underage clubs, and in all honestly, I was annoyed with her because I felt like she’d ‘stolen’ my best friend, Robin. I named one of my characters in Bad Beats after Robin. I have not remained close with Courtney though we have communicated a couple of times in recent years. She is a very fascinating person.

Who were your favorite bands to ‘party’ with?

That’s a hard question. So many of the guys were a blast. I’ll tell you who I couldn’t stand: Van Halen. They treated women like dogs. I loved Def Leppard and AC/DC. Even rode back to the hotel party in AC/DC’s limo. Limo rides were a big deal back then, especially when you’re with the band. One time, I had all of Night Ranger piled in my tiny car! I drove Rick Savage from Def Leppard back to the hotel…I didn’t go home until morning. Wink. Wink.

What kinds of memorabilia did you collect while hanging out with the bands?

Of course, things like guitar picks and drumsticks, t-shirts etc. I had a really cool robe from China that I got from Chris Glenn (Bass Player, MSG) and a pair of brown socks from Michael Schenker (Lead Guitar, MSG). I have numerous Do Not Disturb door-hangers from hotels and coasters from bars. Yes, I had fake ID. It was the Eighties! I have a great selection of autographs, including Roger Daltrey from The Who.

Was there a group you wanted to meet but never had the chance?

A couple. The biggie was The Rolling Stones. I saw them in concert, in 1982, at the Seattle Kingdome, but went with a guy to the show. I liked this guy a lot, and he was my Mick Jagger substitute, but I regret never meeting the real Mick Jagger. I never saw Led Zepplin or Pink Floyd either.

Best Rock-Star kiss?

Another tough question…really tough. Jake E Lee (Lead Guitar, Ozzy Osbourne), Doc Neesen (Lead Singer, Angel City), Neil Murray (Bass, White Snake), Brian Johnson (Lead Singer, AC/DC)

 about the author

 C.L.

C.L. Riley is an author with four books to her credit…under a different name. A name she intends to keep top secret. (If you know the “real” C.L., keep it hush-hush, please!) And no, she’s not some huge, blockbuster author with a seven figure income, though she’d be all right with that.
She loves to read almost anything, but has a major soft spot for broken, bad boy, alpha males, and has found a new love for MC (biker) romances. She enjoys reading and writing romance, dark fantasy, erotic suspense, paranormal, urban fantasy, new adult… Whoa! Let’s slow it down! Clearly, she is fond of reading and writing an array of diverse stories.
She lives in Oregon with her son, just home from college, her teenage daughter, and several furry friends. Her sense of humor is at times a bit over the top, and she’s not one to keep her thoughts to herself. She’s been called, warm, encouraging, and zany…amongst other things.
Her readers mean the world to her, and she welcomes friendly dialogue and hopes you will connect with her on social media.

blurb

Life is counted in tiny breaths, ones that measure the length of your existence. Life stole the ability to make those breaths easy when Lily was nine years old. Turned her quiet. Made her curl into herself, and shut out a world that threatened to bury her under its weight.

The end of her world is what brings him back—her biker. His chocolate eyes pierce her soul while his club tempts her with a life that she didn’t know she could ever have. Especially not when she was clutching the tattered remains of her existence, and with a weight bearing down on her which makes her unfit for the role of Old Lady. Asher changes that. He wants to set about repairing it, repairing her and her broken world. The problem is, even his strong shoulders can’t carry the burden of her sorrow.

Asher doesn’t take no for an answer. She may have given him her heart three years ago, but never in her wildest dreams would she imagine she had possessed his for the same amount of time.

Just when it seems like she may be able to ride off into the horizon, the world isn’t quite finished trying to rob her of breath. Of life.

Some devote a lifetime to the endless pursuit of love. Others spend even longer trying to outrun it. Between the shimmering lights of Paris and New Orleans’ commercialized sin, author J.D. Lexx embarks on his latest hunt. Once content to walk blindly in the light, these days he prowls a different world, one of shadow and sensuality where flesh yields to the probing hungers of fantasy. Driven by painful reminders of opportunity left unseized, he roams, tirelessly seeking the next in a growing collection of Crimson Confessions.

Yet these tales of conquest and seduction which have brought such notoriety are merely bait for a more transcendent prey. The one he truly stalks is infinitely more elusive, and lethal in her charms. To win her over, and write the happy ending to this unfinished story, an infamous collector of secrets must now lay his own bare for all to see. Chasing a trail of enticing exploits stretching from Sin City to Prague, every stop leads him back to the beginning…and one step closer to her.

iscream excerpt

As soon as I penetrated the sweltering heat between her lips, I sprung to life across her tongue, engorging with the very blood that fled my extremities until her mouth strained to contain me. First, my eyes rolled back in sheer bliss at the all-consuming warmth, and then at the skill with which she applied it. With each stifled moan that vibrated through her throat and into my flesh, she not only enhanced her raw sexual value but left me increasingly curious about the kind of bad decisions that lead a woman like this here, of all places.

Pulled free from a descending haze of my own, I looked down to marvel at her enthusiasm, only to find those eyes still locked on mine. Damn, the girl learned quickly. Flashing a glint of bravado that endeared her all the more, she pulled me briefly from her pursed lips and asked again, just as earlier in the day, “You like, yes?”

As if empowered by my approval, she immediately doubled her efforts, tightening her grip and flicking her tongue in playfully erratic lashes. With the slightest shift, she adjusted her angle and drove down with even greater force, burying my entire length and swallowing deeply to engage muscles that sent me reeling.

Only once I opened my eyes again did I notice the burning attention cast down from our host and his illustrious, voyeuristic gathering—a handful of whom wore outfits virtually identical to those ladies on the floor. It seemed that even a few fellow guests had opted to stay behind and ogle, having long since cast their own conquests aside.

While it has never been my style to put on a public exhibition, it’s not like I could drag her to a more secluded location. As much as I cringed at the barbaric notion, she was not mine to take. I had to respect the reality that, in such a strictly supervised environment, she was borrowed property to be enjoyed at the watchful discretion of the master.

With the reasoning centers of my brain already thoroughly frozen and my inhibition drunken at best, our audience could have ordered pizza and called over friends for all I cared. I had a hotter, tighter, and infinitely more gripping engagement ready to drop in my lap.

“Get off that cold floor,” I urged, coaxing myself free of her insatiable grip and ordering her upright—vulnerable, exposed, and simpering at my whim. “Turn around.” Of all the commands so far laid down, I found it fascinating that only this one prompted a distinct moment of hesitation.

“Yes, sir.” She spoke to the ground as she turned away, tightening every muscle as if preparing for an unseen but inevitable assault.

Leaning forward, I rested one outstretched hand over the small of her back. Feeling the raised lash marks for the first time only triggered further anger toward any beast that would so irreparably desecrate such a treasure. My other hand dug firmly into her hip as I pushed forward, forcing her over at the waist and then lifting the tattered dress to expose her entirely.

With her legs spread slightly, she struggled to maintain balance against the pressure of my palm, sparking the more wicked recesses of my imagination even as I battled to differentiate myself from the men behind those marks. Try as I might, I simply couldn’t help myself. Did that make me a monster as well?

iscream 10 things

  • How habitual is your creative process? Where do you do your writing?

Just like every author I know, there’s always a favorite spot where the inspiration simply flows. Perhaps it’s a nook at the far end of a flower garden or a spare room to which others are barred from entry. Personally, I find my best writing takes place over the writhing skin of a naked, glistening Micronesian princess as she’s pleasured by three nubile ladies-in-waiting.

When that option is unavailable—unfortunately quite often—I do most of my writing outdoors, where there are no walls to close in around me. It’s amazing how effectively the rustle of a breeze can spark thoughts and visuals in the mind. It tends to liberate and helps the words flow unencumbered. But then, that’s just me.

  • Is there a message in your book you want readers to grasp?

Sometimes I’m not quite sure what the message is until I’m done writing and start reading back through to find a distinct theme or moral—even if it’s simply the virtues of immorality. When I set out to write the Crimson Confessions series, it was always intended as far more than a quick and passing thrill. I wanted purpose, intent, a thread of commonality running through it all.

In Malediction, I feel that message is boiled down to a few core elements: seize the indulgence now rather than wait and linger in fear of judgment; take the road less traveled, even if it requires combat boots and a machete to navigate it; and please, for the love of God, embrace your imagination and all that comes with it. Never settle for less.

  • When naming a characters, do you give any thought to the actual meaning? (How do you go about naming characters?)

Oftentimes, I like to give my characters a name that playfully nods to their personality, past or future. Nothing too overt or obvious, because I feel like that can become campy and a bit too archetypal. But if I’m laying the groundwork for a new character who closely resembles someone from my life, I like to name them in a way that shines a light on those characteristics—good or bad—that earned them a spot in literary infamy.

  • How do you stay motivated as a writer? What inspires you?

In all honesty, nothing inspires me more than the chance to interact with my readers and to hear the elements and aspects that made them fall in love. I think we all have times when we step back and wonder if there’s any purpose or benefit to our writing, and to hear that our thoughts and work resonated in a substantial way with someone else is the greatest compliment possible.

  • Least favorite food?

Any food that requires flooding a bog and raking up the bits that float is an instant ‘pass’ in my book.

  • How many hours do you devote to writing?

ALL of them. When I’m engaged in a project, I’m either actively writing or thinking about the next stage pretty much constantly. It’s when I’m between projects that I begin to feel a little lost now and then.

  • If you had one super power what would it be?

Invisibility, without a doubt. To be a fly on the wall, anywhere and everywhere. Time travel would be nice too, I suppose. Actually, could we combine both powers into one so I can covertly watch how some of history’s great moments really went down?

  • What other creative outlets do you have?

If you’ve read my work, you probably realize I’m a big fan of cooking and the cultural inroads it can bring. I just love the sensory exploration of a new dish and the way it plays on your tongue. Not as many people know it, but I’m also a passionate photographer. Portraits, nudes, wildlife, architecture…I love it all. There is beauty in everything, isn’t there? In the chips and the cracks and the scars. It’s all about how we perceive it, and how it’s captured through a lens.

  • What has been the biggest surprise to you in the book world?

The biggest surprise, by far, in the book world has got to be the immense support just waiting to be heaped on a new author who earns it. The passion. The obsession for some. As a writer, sometimes it’s easy to begin to feel like you’re an outcast with nowhere you fit in. But then you meet a few readers who share your particular blend of insanity and you realize that your place was there along, just waiting for you to find it.

  • Do you outline and create a plan or just go with the flow?

I have tried both methods and to some degree I hybridize the two, but I find my stories flow much better if I loosen the grip and let them flow as they want to. I have an idea where it’s going at the start, with a very loose outline of sorts, but when it’s all said and done, if it comes down to letting the story take a direction it suddenly wants to go in or strangle it to follow my lead, I’ll always choose the former and be as surprised as the rest of you where it takes me.

I wake up and I’m in a bed that I recognize, it’s the one I shared with Jared.  Jamie is standing at the foot of the bed, with her phone out.

“Where is he?”

“Probably back in Georgia by now.”

I shoot up out of the bed. “What? Why? When did he leave?”

“After he carried you to this bed. You fell asleep crying outside his door.”

“Why would he leave?”

“Are you serious? I don’t blame him. Why would you throw that in his face Kollie?” She looks at me with an icy stare. “I should knock you the fuck out. She wasn’t just your best friend, Kollie. Remember? That was also his child that died. Did you forget what he told you? You never even let him explain a damn thing before you ran off to see your old fucked up family. You just left him.”

“HE LEFT ME TOO!”

“And came back. What? Did you need to dish some payback? Is that what this was? Because so help me Kollie if I came down here and left my child for you to be a selfish bitch and shove this in his face because of what he told you about Cara, I will forget our friendship and deliver a fucking hook to that beautiful jaw.”

“Of course not. But fuck. Help me. Call him. Now!”

“No. Just let him cool off. You can see him when we get back home.”

“No Jamie I’m not going back yet.”

“You’re kidding me right?”

“No, I still have stuff to do.”

“You’re one fucked up girl. Good riddance. I’m done trying, Kollie. This is bullshit, and you know it.” She stands from the bed and turns to look at me. “I’ll always be here for you, but what you’re doing isn’t right, and you damn well know it.”

excerpt

When I look up, there she is, standing near the hotel entrance and looking straight at me. She’s wearing a white tank top and cutoff jeans. Her skin is sun kissed and she has a bright smile on her face. She’s easily the most beautiful woman in this hotel. Hell, in this state. I instantly jump up and start walking toward her. As I approach, I see the tears rolling down her cheeks, and then she’s running toward me. When she finally reaches me, she jumps into my arms and holds on tight. My arms encircle her and I hold her as close to me as humanly possible, enveloping her with everything I have. A sob escapes her and she starts laughing, and I can’t help but laugh too. I have missed this girl so much. More than I even realized. But the dreadful fear that this is only temporary fills my stomach. I want to hold on to her forever, and never let her go.  I don’t want her to know what I’m thinking, so I force myself to concentrate on how good it feels to have her back in my arms. “Goddamn, baby I’ve missed you.” I inhale her scent as I hold her close.

“I missed you too.” She says and pulls back, looking up at me. “You’re scruffy.”

“I meant to shave, but I woke a little late.” She makes the scrunched up nose face at me and I can’t help but laugh.

“I kind of like it.”

She touches my face softly before pulling me into her for a kiss. It’s a relief because I was so worried about whether or not she would allow me to kiss her, to hold her, or to tell her how much I love her. The feeling of her lips touching mine is perfect, the moment frozen in time. I never want it to end.  After a while, a minute or an hour, I’m not sure which, she pulls back and slides down my body before her feet land on the marble tile of the hotel lobby. She looks so beautiful and all I can think about is the one thing I want to do right now.  Take her back to my room and show her how much I’ve missed her. Lay her out on my bed and worship every inch of her.

“How long are you here for?” She asks me.

“As long as you’re here, I’m here.”

She laughs at this, “I have somewhere to be tonight, but would you like to go someplace now? Talk? Eat? Whatever! I miss you like crazy.”

“My room? Beach?”

“Oh Lord, not the beach, if I go back I may die from sun exposure, we’ve been there every day thanks to Jamie.”

“Ok. My room it is.” I look around for Jamie.

“She’ll be fine. She is canceling her flight. And then she has to make some calls.”

I nod and we set off for the elevators. “What do you have to do tonight?” I ask while enjoying the feel of her and in mine as we walk hand in hand.

“I’m meeting someone. Family, I never knew I had. I found her last week, and she’s agreed to meet me tonight at her workplace.”

“Who is it?”

“I’ll explain later. Let’s get upstairs. I really want to hear about you.”

“I’m perfect Kollie, just missing you.”

“I miss you too.” She says as she turns to me in the elevator that’s taking us to the sixth floor. Her eyes are haunted like they are hiding secrets that she wants to share, but she can’t. I can tell that she’s struggling, that she wants to express her true feelings. I pull her face to mine and kiss her deeply. Her hands go to my hair, and she runs her fingers through it, softly massaging my scalp.  Without evening thinking about it, I instinctively lift her up into my arms and press her back against the elevator wall. Her legs wrap around my waist as I grip her delectable ass and squeeze. Trying to get myself under control, I break away just long enough to whisper in her ear how very much I love her.

Jackson placed the phone back on his nightstand and dropped a kiss on top of her head.  “Morning.”

“I’d like to say good morning, but…yeah.”

“Just have to know,” he said while running his fingers through her hair, “do you have a stash of cats in that house I don’t know about?  ‘Cause I’ll be honest, I’m not really into cats.”

“No, I don’t have cats.  Mom’s just worried that I’m going to end up an old maid.  I swear she had Chase and I’s wedding already planned out, and then all the crap hit the fan.  She thinks I’ll never find anyone else.  I love her confidence in my abilities to snag a man, by the way.  When she realized I had picked up knitting and could do that, well, you’d think my life was over.  She’s just certain that I’ll end up alone.”

“Snag a man?”

“Oh just be quiet.  I’ve had enough of you this morning too,” she quipped.

“Already?” he asked.  “You just woke up.”

“Yes, already.  Now shush it so I can go back to sleep.”

“You realize it’s noon?  You really want to go back to bed?”

“Why the hell not?  Haven’t you ever spent a day in bed?  It’s awesome!  The only thing that’d make a day in bed better is if you had a TV up here so we could watch Netflix and chill.”

“When you say, ‘Netflix and chill’…” he trailed off not knowing how to ask.  The guys said it all the time, but he couldn’t tell if Emma was being serious or not.

“You know…TV, in bed.  I heard that House of Cards show is really good.  I haven’t had a chance to see it.”

Jackson couldn’t help the laugh that bubbled out, “Babe, you know when guys say, ‘Netflix and chill’ it’s code for a booty call?”

“What?!  No way!  And all this time, I thought my friends were just binge watching shows.  Huh, I guess you learn something new every day.  And here I just wanted to be entertained.”

“If it’s entertainment you want,” Jackson wagged his eyebrows, “I can think of several ways to keep you entertained.”

“Then it wouldn’t be a relaxing day in bed, would it?”

“You could lay back and let me do all the work,” he told her with a wink

Once Josh convinces Payton to give him a shot, she’s so closed off that he wonders if it’s even worth it. Josh can tell there’s something special about Payton though, and as soon as he goes all in, he’s ready to show her that some rules are made to be broken.

iscream 10 things

1. I’m a chronic mover. The first move I remember happened at age ten, and I have been moving around the world ever since. I have personally lived in thirteen different places (some of them multiple times), five states, and two countries (US and Germany). One thing that never changes is how much the process stresses me out. My husband and I have it down to a fine science now, and we are usually on the ball. If you ever catch me in the middle of a move though, you’ll just have to realize, it’s not you; it’s me. Honestly, I promise. I get tunnel vision and it takes a lot for me to see the forest through the trees. As much as it stresses me out though, I worry about the day that we aren’t moving anymore. I don’t know if I can see myself actually staying put someplace. It’s a strange concept to me.

2. Everyone has an eye catcher on their resume. Want to know what mine is? Wait for it…Blood making! That’s right, I make blood. I guess I should back up, huh? This might be the right time to tell you I have a BA in Technical Theatre. I lived up my college career on the stage and behind the scenes making shows happen. My area of expertise was hair and makeup. I was the go-to girl for those things, and I even spent a semester in Chicago interning with one of the top five theatres to learn more about my craft. During my junior year we did a show that needed blood. Now you can just go down to the supply store and buy the stuff, but it’s expensive and might not always the greatest for what you need. That was the case for us. So I spent a month perfecting a recipe that not only looked real on stage but also came clean in the wash. I had cups of the stuff in my mini fridge, on the counters in the theatre, and in other places. It was worth it to see it look so great on stage (I’m sure that’s a techie thing). That was also the year I won Female Techie of the Year. I’d like to say it was because of the awesome blood, but you’d have to ask everyone who voted for me if that was their reason.

3. Ready for a shocker? I’m a PK. For those that don’t know what that is, it’s a preacher’s kid. I hated it when I was a kid because everyone thought I needed to act a certain way or do certain things. Now that I’m an adult, it’s just another label that I can chose to wear or not. I get a lot of questions about my parents and how they feel about me writing romance. Well, I’ll tell you what my parents think. My dad is always the first in line to buy my books even if he won’t read them. He tells me all the time how proud he is of me, and he is always there to joke with me when I need it. My mom is the same. She called the other day to tell me she ran into a lady she knew at a bookstore who was picking up a couple romance books. She walked up to her and told her that my new book was coming up and she should check it out. Mom pulled up the book right there on her phone so the lady could check it out. I couldn’t ask for more supportive and loving parents.

4. If you know me personally, you might wonder if everyone or everything in my books is me or about me. The answer is no. Playing by the Rules follows Payton who is dealing with a TBI (brain injury). She’s the product of a single parent, and has one rule, no boyfriends until after she graduates. The only part in this that is true to me is the head injury. I wrote this book almost four years ago. I was frustrated because I was in the middle of trying to figure out a way to detox the medications I was on, figure out other treatment options, and so many other things that went along with my own TBI. I love 90s music, attended Southwestern College, and I did have a Jetta at one point in time. However, I am not my characters. I love writing little pieces of things I know because I feel like it gives it more depth. Playing with Fire is no different. I wrote this book as soon as I finished Playing by the Rules, and it was a much needed distraction in my life. My husband was deployed himself, and this book was what I worked on in the evenings after I was finished for the day. The feeling a loved one gets when they hear the news that a deployment is looming or the excitement you feel when they’re coming home, those are all things that I have personally lived. That said, there are plenty of things in the book that I have never experienced. So that was the long answer. The short answer is that all my books are a work of fiction.

5. I used to hate reading. Say what?! If you saw my Kindle now and knew how many books I breeze through a month, you wouldn’t believe it, but it’s the honest truth. I hated to read. When I was in high school, I had trouble with reading comprehension. My whole college career was spent reading things like Clan of the Cave Bear and a bunch of plays like Death of a Salesman. While those can be great, it was just a lot at one time. It wasn’t until I moved to Germany and didn’t have my belongings that I picked up a book. I breezed through all of that series, and then I found another series. I got into audiobooks after that, and then when we moved back to the US, I got a Kindle. The world has never been the same.

6. When it comes to movies, there’s no dispute in this house what we’re watching. When it comes down to it, my husband and I can agree that it will probably be some kind of a horror movie on the screen. What if there’s not a good one that’s come out recently? Not to worry! We watch crap horror movies too. There’s only been a couple that we couldn’t make it through.

7. I love to travel. In fact if you told me that I couldn’t have another gift for as long as I live, but we’d travel, I’d be all over it. It doesn’t even have to be to exotic locations, although those are nice. Some of my favorite vacations include a trip I took to Singapore when I was in college. It was a seventeen day trip where we traveled around Singapore and Malaysia singing with a choir I was in. It was so great to see the country and eat the food. I’ve never been able to look at Asian food here in the US the same. Another of my favorite trips was several years ago when we took the kids to Italy (we were in Germany at the time) to see the tower of Pisa and spend time on the beach. My husband and I also visited St Lucia recently were we spent a week laying on the beach, drinking adult drinks, and just spending time alone. Experiences mean so much more to me than actual gifts.

8. If there’s something I need to be doing on my computer, chances are I’m scanning YouTube. I watch so many videos, and I love them! Those Bad Lip Read videos, amazing! In fact, a friend of mine and I spent a month or two sending each other little gifts in the mail (like orange peanuts and Scooby Snacks) just from that one video. It’s a total time waster for me, which is why I get some of my best work done outside the house. I joke that I write so much in my car that the payment should be a tax write-off. Wouldn’t that be nice? If I really need to work, and I’m at home, I have different things that I can do to keep myself focused. I often turn off my WiFi, listen to a song on repeat, or write with a friend and check in after a certain amount of time. If you want someone to exchange meme’s or YouTube videos with though, hit me up!

9. My first car was called the “Cow Car” (may it rest in peace). It got the name because the car was white with black accents and the seat covers were cow spotted. Couldn’t have guessed that one, could you? This car was an ’86, I believe, Ford Escort EXP. There weren’t a lot of them made. It was a two seater, and for a high schooler, that wasn’t cool. What did work was the giant hatchback it had. We could shove about three or four people back there, and we often did. This car didn’t have air conditioning. The heater was spotty. There were a lot of times my dad had to hit the engine with a hammer to make it work right. The ironic part of this whole story was how the poor car finally met its demise. I was moving home from doing summer theatre, and it had been raining. Well, when you live in Kansas, there are a few things that are certain, especially in Western Kansas. There is going to probably be some kind of construction, you’ll run into farm equipment traveling down the road, and there are always cattle trucks on the highways (and boy do they smell). So I’m on the road home, and I’m coming up to some of the said construction. It had been raining that day, and all of a sudden my car starts to hydroplane. It’s not hydroplaning on water though. Nope, the poor cow car died because I hydroplaned on cow crap and rear-ended a truck. And yes, I’m humming Alanis Morissette’s Ironic as I type this.

10. Wanna know what really gets my heart racing? Gorillas. Those creepy beasts and I don’t get along and never will. You’re probably thinking, “There has to be a story there.” You’re right! When I was in kindergarten, my class went on a field trip to the zoo. I was with my group and towards the end of the day; we went into the gorilla exhibit. It was pretty empty, but as a kid, I didn’t care. I ran right up and sat down by the glass to watch the gorillas. They weren’t doing anything so we went and looked at a few of the signs and stuff, and then went back to check them out. They were finally moving around. So like any other five year old, I put my face up by the glass. The biggest one came charging at me and banged the glass right where my face was! I was horrified. We found out a few minutes later that there was a tornado in the area and we needed to take cover. Now, as an adult, I realize that the gorilla probably was acting that way because of the storm. So I gave it another chance. Let me tell you something. Every time I get near one of those things, they can smell my fear. They will pound the glass, get aggressive, and many other things. I took my kids into see one once, and it eyed me the second I came though the door and followed me until I left. I think there’s some kind of gorilla network, and my picture is on it. Needless to say, I don’t hang out with the gorillas at the zoo when we go.
