HEARTSTRINGS BY CASEY
HAGEN
RELEASE DAY JUNE 9TH

Ryan
Ward is desperate to escape her soul-sucking life. Between catering to the work
demands of her ambitious father, a popular Washington senator, and extricating
herself from her abusive ex-boyfriend, Ryan yearns for the life of which she
once dreamed: that of a country singer/songwriter. But how does one of
Washington’s elite shed the slimy skin of politics for cowboy boots and a
Taylor six-string? And can she do it incognito?
Slade
McCall traded money for passion when he left his high six-figure income for a
Texas ranch to indulge in his love of the land and, more importantly, his
autistic young daughter. With an intractable ex-wife and ranch demands beating
him down, the last thing Slade needs in his life is a troubled woman with a
fading black eye, the voice of an angel, and a dubious past. But when need
outweighs common sense, he hires the would-be country singer for a short stint
of housework at the ranch.
Ryan
and Slade know tangling their hearts is a bad idea—she has a past to escape and
a dream to pursue, and he has a ranch to build and a daughter to protect. But
they can’t deny their desires or their hearts, and as their love strengthens it
is put to the test. Someone is intent on physical harm, and Slade’s ex is
determined to reconcile. Will the pressures destroy what Ryan and Slade have
started to build? Or will they follow the sounds . . . of their Heartstrings .
. .

RELEASE MAY 10TH

They say in order to find yourself you have to go home.
What if home was what you’re running from?
Where did that leave you?
Always on the other side of the fence.
Always looking in.
Always wishing you were someone you couldn’t be.
Until one day you meet her.
The one.
She was my high, but she was also…
My demise.

Colors blended together making it hard to focus on one thing.
I blinked a few times and just like that…
I saw her face.
As if she was standing right in front of me.
Smiling.
Happy.
Laughing.
My whole world…
My girl.
I felt my lips curl up slightly at the vision as I reached out for her.
Wanting to touch her, needing to hold her, yearning to kiss her.
Craving, God, craving to fucking love her.
“I’m sorry,” I murmured out loud to no one but the illusion of my drug-infested
mind. “I’m so fucking sorry,” I repeated repentantly, longing for her to believe me.
Aching for her to love me again like she used to.
I don’t know how long I sat there, staring at her beautiful face before my eyes,
subconsciously rubbing the tattooed key that was placed over my heart. I
couldn’t take it anymore, and the desire won over the haze.
It was too powerful.
It was too vivid.
I grabbed my phone. “Baby,” I said into the speaker. The ringing quickly
followed, going straight to voicemail. I hung up and tried again. “Baby,” I
urged with desperation in my tone.
Still nothing.
I tried again and again and again.
I would try until the end of time if that’s what it took for her to answer.
To talk to me.
To save me.
To crave me.
Time just seemed to standstill, as my life slowly played out in front of me. Trying
to balance in between the light and the darkness when all I could see was gray.
“What?!” she screamed into the phone, finally answering after I don’t know how many
failed attempts. “What the hell do you want now?”
“Mi cielo.” I breathed a sigh of relief.
She ignored my term of endearment. I hadn’t called her that in such a long time.
My heaven.
“What do you want, Austin? Why are you calling me?
We’re over! I can’t do this anymore!”
I shut my eyes and let my mind wonder, allowing it to go to another place in time
where she didn’t hate me.
“I remember the first time I made you smile,”
I chuckled, as if it had just happened.
My nerves were on fire. The mere sound of her breathing through the phone was too
intense for me. I licked my lips, my mouth suddenly dry.
“I remember when you used to smile just for me. Do you remember, baby?
Do you remember what my love feels like?”
I heard her faintly breathing.
“Do you remember my hands on you? My lips? My tongue?
The first time I made you come with my mouth?
Do you remember all the times since?
Tell me I’m not forgotten.
Tell me you remember, baby.”
Silence.
“I love you, Briggs. I love you so fucking much. You’re killing me, don’t you see
that? I’m dying without you.”
“No, Austin. You were dying with me,” she rasped, knowing that it killed her to say that.
“The first time I saw your face, I thought to myself, damn, this beautiful girl is
goin’ to be the death of me. You were perfect in every way. I was a cocky son
of a bitch who needed you then, as much as I need you now.”
More silence.
“I had a dream about you, baby. I always fucking dream about you. In my dream you
had a ring on your finger. A ring I put there. You belonged to me. Only mine.
Forever fucking mine. You were pregnant, Briggs. You looked so goddamn happy. I
saw light at the end of the tunnel for the first time in years.”
She sniffled into the phone.
“I made love to you. Slow, just the way you love. Taking my time to touch every
last inch of your body. Memorizing every last bit of you. Making you come until
you begged me to stop. I didn’t.”
“I can’t—” she tried to interject, but I didn’t let up.
“I kissed your stomach. Our baby. Letting my lips linger there, whispering sweet
lullabies, letting her know daddy will always be there. Baby, it was so real.
For a second I gave you the one thing you so desperately wanted, the one thing
I can’t give you.”

“Why don’t we do something tomorrow night? Saturday night is
a good night to party and since we are in our 30s, we will all be home by 11.”
I said that last part laughing and Rob joined in with me.
“So true so true baby girl. Now spill why you had a smile on your face walking into your classroom and I get here, the smile is faded and you had this look of panic on your face.”
“You saw that did you?” He just nodded and waited for me to continue. “I met this guy online in the gaming community. We have known each other for a year but more on a personal level the last few months. We have been emailing, Skyping, and text messaging each other a lot.”
“I see a but coming on or more to the story.”
“There is a but and a huge one at that! We started calling on the phone when we are on breaks from work and at night. We just told one another that we like each other.”
“Has Abby decided to start dating? Oh, this is cause for
celebration.” Rob clapped his hands in excitement. He knows the hell I went through with all of the boys that I have been with and knows the toll it took on me.
“He lives in Florida and he doesn’t know what I look like.
What if he doesn’t like what he sees? What if he wants to make me his dirty little secret? What if I like him a lot and he breaks my heart?” I had tears coming down my face.
“I felt that same way when I met Aaron. We met online in the
same gaming community that you met Cash. I was terrified that he wouldn’t love me, break my heart, or even not feel the same way. I got over that in a hurry because we all need to take a leap of faith in the love department.”  Aaron stood about 5’11 and wasn’t as muscular as Rob but he was well built. He had brown hair, hazel eyes, and a beard. I wasn’t a fan of beards but my God he made it look sexy. He was a doctor, an OB GYN. He had funny stories about how his female patients would flirt with and ask him out on dates but when they saw Rob coming around and he told them that he was in a relationship with him, they were heartbroken. They were not upset about his lifestyle but the fact that he wouldn’t date them. Rob was doing well, for himself.
“I am just an overweight girl who doesn’t deserve love and is always going to be someone’s dirty little secret.”
Rob slammed his hand onto the table making me jump. “Why is
it that you listen to all the people who are not worthy of you and ignore those who love you the most?”
“It is easier to listen to the negative than the positive.
The people who love me most will always say what I want to hear not what is true. Do you think I like being this way? Do you think I like doubting every man who comes into my life? Do you think I don’t want the husband, children, and know the feeling of what true love is? Until you have been subjected to this way of thinking all your life, don’t get mad at me for feeling like this, Rob.”
“Honey, I am not mad at you but just disappointed. You are so beautiful and sexy that any man,” I went to open my mouth to say something and he held up his hand, “who is deserving of you. I wish you could see it. When you meet the man who is worthy of you, he will show you and you will believe it. I think you should keep getting to know Cash and see where things go. Keep an open mind. If all else fails, think “What would Rob say?” I am very wise, just so you know. I laughed, “Wise huh, maybe a wise-ass.” He feigned shock by my words.

Turner jumped off the bed like her kiss had burned him. Riley looked up at him, confused. Had she done something wrong?
He paced the small room and raked both hands through his hair,
the movement causing the muscles in his arms to flex and strain against the thin fabric of his t-shirt. His face had gone pale, and there was a faint sheen of sweat on his forehead.
“Are you okay?”
“No, I’m not fucking okay,” he bit out, pinning her with a fierce gaze.
She drew back, not prepared for the intensity she saw behind his
silvery blue eyes. He looked as if he were ready to consume her with his next breath, which wasn’t all that unlikely considering he was a lion.
“Sorry,” she whispered, as if she had made the accusation out loud.
He scrubbed his hands over his face. “You’ve done nothing wrong.”
She crawled off the bed and stood, making her way towards the
door. “I shouldn’t have asked you to lie down with me. Whatever this is between us, it’s best we—”
He had her pinned before she could blink, his hard body pressed
against her, palms flat against the wall, trapping her. “You have no
fucking idea what’s between us.”
His voice was thick, heavy with need, and she shivered in response.
Holy hell the man was sexy.
“Then tell me,” she whispered.
She didn’t think it was possible, but his expression darkened
even more. A look that made her insides melt.
He was close enough that his breath tickled her lips. His gaze
slid down to her mouth as he brought a hand to her throat. His thumb caressed the area where her pulse seemed to beat with a life of its own. He dipped his head and ran his lips over down her neck, nipping gently at the spot his thumb had been.
A soft moan formed in her throat. He barely touched her and yet
her entire body trembled with need.
“Turner.” She could hear the plea in her voice, demanding more.
A growl, more animal than human, resonated from his chest.
“My lion wants to mark you.”
“Mark me?”
He nodded slowly, his gaze returning to hers. “Make you my mate.”
“Oh.” She didn’t know what else to say. The idea sent a thrill of excitement down her spine. His animal wanted her, but by his reaction, she knew the man in him wasn’t too keen on the idea. “And that makes you mad?”
He tilted his head and studied her. “It just complicates things.”
“Because of my father.”
He nodded, and she thought for a second he would back away.
She placed her hands on his chest, willing him to stay. “It
doesn’t have to be complicated. I’m not looking for anything long-term. To be anyone’s…mate.”
A small laugh rattled in his chest, and he gripped the back of
her neck, placing his forehead against hers. His other hand tightened around her waist, drawing her closer to him. She could feel the thick length of him pressing against her stomach.
He let out a harsh, drawn out breath. “What do you want, Riley?”
Arching into him, desperate for his touch, she ran her fingers
down his chest, stomach, until she was cupping him boldly.
Her whole body trembled as she gave voice to her desire.
“You. I want—”
His lips descended on hers before she could finish, devouring
her mouth until they were both breathless. There was an element of something dark, dangerous, almost feral in the kiss, and for a moment, she wondered if
she should be afraid. As his tongue swept into her mouth again, the thought disappeared.
She shouldn’t be having these feelings, but there was no more
denying them. She was head over heels in lust with Turner Payne.
His fingers slid into her hair, tugging her head back, so he could rake his tongue along her jaw and down her neck.
She ached to have him inside her, to feel his hands and mouth on her body. “Please.”
Effortlessly, he lifted her arms around his neck and scooped her
up, carrying her to the bed. When he placed her down on the mattress and stood, she whimpered at the loss of contact between them.
He pulled his shirt over his head and tossed it on the floor.
“Is this what you want?”
All she could do was nod and watch as he slowly unbuckled his
belt. Her mouth watered, and she swallowed hard as his pants dropped to the floor. His cock strained against the fabric of his boxer briefs and she could see the delicious length of him. She’d seen his glorious body before, but never with the intention of what they were about to do, and she felt her cheeks burn.
“Take off your clothes, Riley.”
The dominance in his voice made her thighs clench. She obeyed, acutely aware of the way his gaze followed her every movement. Stretching her shirt over her arms, she discarded it on the floor.
She kneeled before him, one the bed, in her bra and panties. Her knees shook and it took all her strength to stay there, as his eyes roamed over her body.

Power coiled through him. Roughly, he hauled her to the bed. Her back met the mattress and he positioned himself above her. He spread her thighs wider with his knees. She curled her hands over his broad shoulders, feeling the muscles clench and tighten under her palms.
He stilled above her. The thick head of his cock nudged the swollen folds.
Amidst the addictive hunger, there was something more. Something Zoe didn’t want to speculate on. For a moment, apprehension edged at her arousal.
“Say it, Zoe. Say you’re mine.”
It was a claiming.
He was claiming her.
And she desperately wanted to belong.
“I’m yours,” she whispered.
He thrust into her, working himself deeper, his gaze locked with hers. She gasped and gripped his shoulders tighter. He eased back, then pushed inside her again, slowly, deeply. He filled her perfectly.
“Mine,” he growled. “My mate.”
“Yes.”
She was fighting to breathe. Fighting to make sense of the sensations tearing through her.
His hips jerked hard, burying himself inside of her.
“You need to say it back to me, angel.”
“My mate,” she whimpered, feeling a new surge of energy pulsating through her body.
A brilliant array of color, pleasure, sensations vibrated through her. For a brief, intense moment, she felt as if her body and soul merged with his, and her senses exploded with the pleasure of it.
His cock throbbed inside her, thick and hard, stretching the sensitive tissue.
Electric pulses began to race through her body. Jack’s jaw clenched, fighting for control. He pulled back, then slammed in, harder, deeper. Impaling her with swift, hard strokes.
She dug her nails into his shoulders and gasped. Her vision darkened as she cried out with her release. The pleasure broke her. Every neuron in her body seemed to explode in ecstasy.
The vortex burst, sending violent waves of energy ricocheting off the walls. She heard Jack’s shout, felt the overpowering pleasure of his release pulsating inside her.
Closing her eyes, Zoe held onto him and knew nothing would ever be the same again.
She was lost to him.

A Message from Author Barbara Speak

Let it be Us released on Monday January 25th. It was brought to my attention there was a problem with the book file. Upon further investigation Amazon admitted they were at fault. The file they sent to reader’s kindles was corrupted within their systems. This was not the fault of my editor, my formatter or myself. The problem has been fixed and Amazon is working on sending all the readers that received the corrupt file, a new copy. The issue that Amazon has caused resulted in bad reviews (based solely on the error) and readers returning the book. This has been very upsetting to me, I have put so much time and energy into making this book close to perfect and one sweep through a computer system has made a mess. I just want to put this out there so you all know this was in no way my doing. It could take up to 3 days to receive the new copy from Amazon, they will notify you via email. If you received the corrupt book, you can still read it, nothing is missing but please don’t base your reviews on the mishap, please base them on the story. I am so sorry for the inconvenience this has caused you, but I don’t want to be attacked in reviews because of something I had no control over. If you left a review based on the formatting, I ask that you edit the review and base it on the storyline not the error. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for understanding. Please give Canyon and Ari the chance they deserve.

Thank you,

Barbara Speak

Turner’s heart beat wildly, and a trickle of sweat rolled
down the side of his face as he stared at the woman’s profile. She didn’t move or react to the fact that he’d almost tracked black tire prints over her sexy baby blue pajama shorts.
He slammed the car door. “What the hell are you doing?
I could have killed you.”
Her shoulders flinched, but she didn’t turn around.
“Did you hear me? I almost killed you. What the hell are you doing standing in the middle of the road?”
Her dark green eyes barely wavered over him as he came to stand in front of her.
He stopped short as recognition swept over him. Bloody hell, of all the people to almost run over, it had to be Richard Boyd’s oldest daughter, Riley.
If the agency found out he’d rented an apartment two blocks from her house, he would be in deep shit. He was already on probation after what happened with Boyd. One more strike and he would get more than a slap on the wrist. He was breaking protocol just talking to her, but it wasn’t his fault that she had a death wish.
Her chin trembled and her eyes glistened with unshed tears.
God, she was gorgeous. His gaze lingered on the full curves of her breasts before travelling to the full bottom lip that begged to be nipped and sucked.
His cock twitched at the thought. Yeah, that’s what he needed, a hard-on for the daughter of his mortal enemy. A man whose death he was somewhat responsible for. Fucking perfect.
Her breathing was rapid and shallow. She was in shock.
Either that or she’d inherited her father’s unhinged mind. The latter thought sent a chill down Turner’s spine.
“You want to tell me why you’re standing out in the
middle of the road in your pajamas?”
She blinked slowly, then turned her attention back to the
red brick bungalow. “My-my sis-sister.”
He laid a hand on her bare shoulder. She was ice cold.
“What about your sister?”
She placed her palms over her eyes and shook her head.
“Oh God, I’m losing my mind.”
Was crazy genetic? It wouldn’t help to agree with her, but
knowing who her father was, her words held a high probability. Still, he couldn’t leave her like this.
He gripped her elbow. “Let’s get you back inside.”
She jerked her arm away, eyes rounding in fear and took an unsteady step backwards. “I can’t go back in there.”
He scrubbed his hands over his face. “Is there someone you want me to call?”
A hysterical laugh escaped her lips. “Yeah, Animal Control.”
He looked back at the house and inhaled deeply through his
nose. Fuck, and double shit. It was faint, but even from thirty feet away he could smell its scent. Why hadn’t he noticed it before? Probably because he was having a hard time keeping his eyes diverted from the taut nipples that pressed against the thin fabric of her tank top.
The day was just getting better and better.
He put his hands up in an effort to look unthreatening, but with his height and build, that was no easy feat. He took a tentative step towards her. “Can you tell me what happened?”
With shaky fingers, she tucked her tussled red hair behind
her ears. “You wo-won’t be-believe me. I don’t know if I believe it
myself.”
“Try me.”
“I heard Kiera’s alarm going off.” She closed her eyes, and her lips quivered as she spoke. “She never sleeps in. I don’t even know why she sets it; she’s up at the same time every day.” Turner clenched his teeth and fought for patience. “And then what happened?”
She hugged herself, her eyes dazed as she tried to
articulate what she’d seen. “I went to Kiera’s room to check on her.”
“But she wasn’t there?” he asked, already knowing the answer. His questions were only putting off the inevitable, but he needed confirmation. “Was the room empty?”
She flinched at his question.
In that single gesture, his suspicions were confirmed. Shit, he had to call the agency, but how was he going to explain why he was near her house in the first place?
He cursed Richard Boyd under his breath. Figured the asshole
would find a way to screw with his life, even beyond the grave.
A little too roughly, he grabbed her upper arm and pulled her towards the SUV. “Get in the car.”
“What?” She stared at him, wide-eyed, and tried unsuccessfully to pull free of his grip.
“Get in the car, Riley. I’ll deal with it.”
She gave him an odd look. “Deal with what? You don’t even know what’s in there.”
He moved quickly, leaning down so he was nose to nose with
her. “Then tell me.” He kept his voice deliberately low, but she didn’t shrink in fear as he expected her to.
“A lion.” She pushed at his chest, and he released her. Bordering on hysterical, she threw her hands in the air. “There was a freaking lion on my sister’s bed.”
That did surprise him.
Of all the victims Turner had analyzed, not one had been of the species panthera leo.
He opened the passenger door and motioned for her to get in.
“I’ll deal with it.”
She gave her head a small shake. “Did you hear me?
There’s a lion—”
He held out a hand to stop her. An older couple walked by,
staring at them. The last thing he needed was to draw more attention. What he needed to do was get the lion contained. Wipe Riley’s memory, and somehow get the animal to the agency’s underground research lab without being detected—So much for his morning nap.
“You need to trust me.”
“Trust you?” Her eyes instantly narrowed and filled with suspicion. “I don’t even know you.”
His phone vibrated in his back pocket.
Incoming Call, Chase Payne flashed on the screen. If there
was anyone in the world he could rely on to help him with this mess, it was his older brother.
He pressed Talk, and brought the phone to his ear. “I need your help.”
There was a heavy sigh on the other end of the line.
“What did you do now?”
Riley’s gaze darted between him and the house. He wasn’t sure which she looked more scared of, him or the lion.
He turned his back to her and lowered his voice. “I’m at the Boyd’s house. I need you to get your ass over here ASAP.”
“Dammit, Turner. If anyone finds out your anywhere near that man’s family—”
“Lay off the lecture. Just get over here. We have a—situation.”
He ended the call before his brother could argue.
Riley chewed on her bottom lip and took a step back when he
approached her. “How do you know my name?”
“Let’s go inside and I’ll explain.” He held out
his hand and gave her a half-smile.
She shook her head and took another step backwards. He shrugged and turned. “Wait,” she called out as he stalked towards the house. The front door was slightly open. The moment he stepped inside, the animal’s scent slammed into him.
“You can’t just barge into someone’s—” “Sit.” He motioned to the sofa in the living room just off the front entrance.
“Look.” She crossed her arms over her chest and narrowed her eyes. “I don’t need you here. I was probably just sleepwalking. I do that sometimes when I’m really stressed, or overheated—” She didn’t finish the sentence. Her jaw went slack as her gaze focused on something behind him.

He didn’t need to turn to know what caused her reaction. “You’ve got to be fucking kidding me. You didn’t think to shut the bedroom door?”
